THE FRIDAY FIVE: Top 5 TV News Stories of the Week Ending 5/7/21

Here's a look at my Top 5 TV news stories of the week!

#1 - NEW "LAW & ORDER" SPINOFF ORDERED
About a month after the big premiere of Law & Order: Organized Crime, NBC is building back up its Law & Order franchise with a series order for Law & Order: For the Defense which will focus more on, you guessed it, the defense side of the courtroom. It's somewhat notable considering the Law & Order franchise has mostly been about prosecuting criminals. Next season will mark the first time since 2010-11 that three shows from the franchise are on the same time as For the Defense will join Organized Crime and, of course, Special Victims Unit (for the record in 2010-11, it was SVU, Criminal Intent and Los Angeles). Will NBC have an all Law & Order night to go with its all Chicago night? Time will tell...

#2 - IMBD TV UPDATES
We'll be getting plenty of Upfront and New Front information in the coming weeks. This week got some news from IMBD TV, which is making a play in the free streaming realm. The Amazon-owned streamer is starting things off with a revival of Leverage, which will premiere July 9, but they also are getting in business with some big names. They picked up a half hour drama from Dick Wolf called On Call and are developing a comedy from Michael Schur and Shea Serrano called Primo. They have also ordered a coming of age dramedy called High School and their big unscripted get, as previously announced, is a deal with Judge Judy Sheindlin. The streaming competition gets even fiercer and now the free services might be the next frontier that brings out several competitors.

#3 - LATE NIGHT UPDATES
In late night news this week, NBC announced that A Little Late with Lilly Singh will end after two seasons. The series has been airing very late in the night, at 1:37am in the old Carson Daly slot but it never really caught on. NBC is not planning to replace it with another slot, they're indicating they will give up on that slot as a potential late night franchise after nearly 20 years. Losing Singh in the late night variety once again means the broadcast networks have no women or people of color hosting late night shows. And speaking of late night, Conan O'Brien will officially end his TBS show on June 24 after 11 years. He will be starting a weekly series for HBO Max and continue to do specials for TBS.

#4 - LOTS OF RENEWALS
There were several renewals this week with more coming. ABC renewed The Good Doctor for a fifth season and Big Sky for a second season. Good Doctor was no surprise and Big Sky really wasn't either, though it has struggled since returning from its long break during the season. Kung Fu was renewed for a second season on The CW after a solid start while Stargirl was renewed for a third season ahead of its second season premiere this summer. Finally, FX has renewed Mayans M.C. for a fourth season.

#5 - "THE IRREGULARS" CANCELLED
There are likely many cancellations coming in the next couple weeks, primarily among the broadcast networks, but the only cancellation this week from scripted programming is Netflix's The Irregulars, which was cancelled after one season. The Sherlock Holmes adjacent drama didn't really break through following its debut in late March. It goes to show that Netflix can tell pretty quickly when a show isn't working.

Check back next week for a new week of blog posts!
