TOP 10 TUESDAY: Top 10 TV Teachers/Coaches

We are Back to School, in one form or another, so today's Top 10 is Top 10 TV Teachers/Coaches!

Close Calls:
Mr. Garvey - Key and Peele
CB Brown - Schooled
Helen Crump - The Andy Griffith Show

10. Cameron Tucker (played by Eric Stonestreet) - Modern Family
We didn't get to see a ton of Cam as a gym teacher and football coach on Modern Family, but I love that the show turned a stereotype on his head by making someone who often appeared flamboyantly gay a competent and effective football coach. And they were never preachy or heavy-handed about it.

9. Charlie Moore (played by Howard Hesseman) - Head of the Class
An anti-Mr. Kotter teaching the anti-Sweathogs, Charlie Moore was the perfect teacher for a group of pretentious straight A students because he was a little bit pretentious himself. As a musical director myself, I love that he was also the musical director at the school.

8. Jessica Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) - New Girl
We didn't get a ton of glimpses into Jess' career on New Girl but knowing everything we do about Jess as a character, she had to be a pretty amazing and fun teacher, right?

7. Mr. Banglian (played by Horatio Sanz) - Saturday Night Live
The hilarious example of a teacher who tried WAY too hard to be cool, Mr. Banglian was one of the funniest parts of an underrated recurring sketch - "Wake Up Wakefield." We all had a teacher like Mr. Banglian in our lives.

6. Mr. Feeny (played by William Daniels) - Boy Meets World
I'm not a loyal Boy Meets World viewer by any means but I've seen enough of the show to know that he was a quintessential teacher who made a difference in kids' lives. If I was a bigger fan of the show, he may have challenged for #1.

5. Coach Hayden Fox (played by Craig T. Nelson) - Coach
Coach Fox is exasperated a lot of the time but wouldn't you be too if you were dealing with bone-headed college football players and bone-headed assistant coaches? He still always had his players' interests at heart.

4. Mr. Katimski (played by Jeff Perry) - My So-Called Life
Jeff Perry only appeared in four episodes of the short run of My So-Called Life, but made a very big impact thanks to his calm and levelheaded demeanor and his connection to struggling teen Rickie.

3. Mr. Collins (played by Steven Gilborn) - The Wonder Years
Steven Gilborn was in less episodes of The Wonder Years than Jeff Perry in My So-Called Life but his impact was undeniable, first as a very stern math teacher and then through his passing and the impact it had on Kevin Arnold.

2. Ms. Frizzle (voiced by Lily Tomlin) - The Magic School Bus
One of the most iconic cartoon characters, Ms. Frizzle was the perfect science teacher. Sure, she could do things no other teacher could do thanks to a certain bus, but she also was kooky and funny and fascinated about science.

1. Coach Eric Taylor (played by Kyle Chandler) - Friday Night Lights
Could there really be any other #1? Eric Taylor was so much more than a football coach. He was a mentor, counselor, pseudo-parent, disciplinarian and cheerleader. Whether giving a pep talk to an entire team or helping an individual player, Coach Taylor should be a role model for all high school coaches.

Tomorrow: A One Season Wonder Look at Mary!
Next Tuesday: Top 10 TV Neighbors!

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
