TOP 10 TUESDAY: Top 10 TV Neighbors

My Top 10 today is Top 10 Neighbors! My caveat for this one is they couldn't also be the lead characters. For example, Joey and Chandler are neighbors to Monica and Rachel on Friends, but they all share equal billing as leads of the show. These are neighbors who are secondary characters.

Close Calls:
Eddie Haskell - Leave it to Beaver
Larry, Darryl & Darryl - Newhart
Winnie Cooper - The Wonder Years

10. Wilson (Earl Hindman) - Home Improvement
One of the classic characters who we never fully see, Wilson provided Tim Taylor lots of sage advice from the other side of the fence and made "Howdy Ho, Neighbor" a common saying.

9. Lenny & Squiggy (Michael McKean & David L. Lander) - Laverne & Shirley
They were so bizarre and sometimes annoying but Lenny and Squiggy were funny neighbors. They provided some really great comedic moments on the show and made Laverne and Shirley look less crazy by comparsion.

8. Phyllis Lindstrom (Cloris Leachman) - The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The busybody and landlord from downstairs, Phyllis was not in a ton of episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show but always made her presence known as her character took over every scene she was in (in a good way).

7. Barney and Betty Rubble (Mel Blanc & Bea Benaderet/Gerry Johnson) - The Flintstones
The Stone Age version of Ed and Trixie Norton, Barney and Betty were slightly off-kilter but also so familiar. They were supportive and kind neighbors who also weren't afraid to get into sticky situations.

6. Millie and Jerry Helper (Ann Morgan Guilbert & Jerry Paris) - The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Dick Van Dyke Show had so many great characters so Millie and Jerry Helper weren't needed as much as they might have been on other shows. But they always made for great episodes, especially Ann Morgan Guilbert's delightfully daffy Millie.

5. Howard Borden (Bill Daily) - The Bob Newhart Show
"Hi Bob" is probably the first thing you think when you see Howard Borden's name. The pilot who lived next to Bob and Emily Hartley was always in a bit of a state of arrested development but about as loyal of a friend as you could find.

4. Gladys and Abner Kravitz (Alice Pearce/Sandra Gould & George Tobias) - Bewitched
The ultimate nosy neighbor, Gladys Kravitz as played by Alice Pearce was so manic and delightful in the first two seasons of Bewitched. The character lost some of her bite after Pearce's death prompted a re-cast but she was still a good foil for Samantha and her long-suffering, deadpanning husband Abner.

3. Marie and Frank Barone (Doris Roberts & Peter Boyle) - Everybody Loves Raymond
Not just neighbors but also in-laws? You can't ask for a better comedic set-up than that. Debra Barone lived through the nightmare of her very judgmental mother-in-law living right across the street and Marie and Frank brought so much comedy due in large part to their proximity.

2. Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) - The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The neighbor and the best friend. Valerie Harper liked to say that Mary Richards was who you always wanted to be but Rhoda Morgenstern was probably who you were. The friendship of the two opposite personalities provided so much comedy in Mary's cozy Minneapolis apartment.

1. Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley & Vivian Vance) - I Love Lucy
Could there be any other neighbors in the top spot? The best friends of the Ricardos, the Mertzes were just an integral to the success of I Love Lucy. Whether they were conspiring together, pitted against each other or just doing life together, they are the best examples of perfect neighbors.

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...
