TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has ordered four more episodes of Superstore, bringing its total to 22. Given that it is NBC's top comedy, this is not a surprise and pretty necessary.

- ABC has ordered up another edition of Live in Front of a Studio Audience, which aired to strong ratings in May. This time, it will be Christmas episodes on December 18. All in the Family will lead things off again and will be paired with Good Times this time.

- FOX has cancelled BH90210 after one season. The revival of the iconic 1990s drama debuted to strong ratings in early August, but those ratings quickly evaporated over the six episode run and it was critically trashed. With a show that I'm sure was pretty expensive, this wasn't a shocking decision.

- ABC has added episodes of both American Housewife and Bless This Mess. Both returning comedies got six additional episodes to bring Housewife to 21 and Bless to 19. Housewife has been a decent performer as a new Friday night anchor while Mess has only been ok leading out of ABC's top comedy, The Conners.

- Just a few days later, ABC cancelled Fresh Off the Boat after six seasons. The show has had its fans but was never able to break out. Of course, its renewal last spring made a lot of headlines thanks to star Constance Wu's social media meltdown expressing her unhappiness with the show getting a renewal. But Wu gets her wish this time around (it's also likely she signed a six year contract so she wouldnt' have been back either way). Boat is the longest running sitcom in history about an Asian family and will ends its run on February 21 at 9pm.

- NBC unveiled its midseason schedule. Replacing The Voice (temporarily) and Bluff City Law on Mondays will be another edition of America's Got Talent: The Champions and season two of Manifest starting January 6. The Voice returns on February 24. As expected, Council of Dads will take over the Tuesday 9pm slot when This is Us ends its season. No official date has been set other than "March." Dads will try to do what Rise and The Village could not. Elsewhere, the second NBC season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will premiere on February 6 at 8:30pm. That same night, Will & Grace will move to 9pm while new multi-camera comedy Indebted will take over at 9:30pm. Indebted seems doomed to fail airing after the very low-rated Will & Grace. A week earlier, The Good Place will say goodbye with a 90 minute event that also includes a Seth Meyers hosted special event. Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector (formerly know as just Lincoln) will be a bridge for The Blacklist and will premiere January 10 in a low priority but lower pressure slot. On Tuesday, January 7, NBC will preview Zoey's Extraodinary Playlist after the season premiere of Ellen's Game of Games. Zoey's will eventually air on Sundays at 9pm starting Feb 16 sandwiched between the new Little Big Shots and season htree of Good Girls.

- The CW also unveiled its midseason plans. The new Katy Keene will premiere on February 6 at 8pm and take the slot from Supernatural, which will move to Mondays for its final run of episodes. When it does resurface on Mondays starting March 16, it will be paired with the second season of Roswell, New Mexico. The CW also announced series finale dates for its two longest running series. Arrow will end its eight season run on January 28 while Supernatural will end its record-setting CW run of 15 seasons on Monday, May 18. Replacing Arrow on Tuesdays will be DC's Legends of Tomorrow, which will premiere January 21 and air for one week behind the penultimate episode of Arrow at 8pm. There were no announced premiere dates for In the Dark or The 100 so summer seems likely.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
