SEASON IN REVIEW: 2016-17 Miscellaneous Awards

BEST RETURNING COMEDY
Superstore (NBC) - I love many ABC family sitcoms, they are my favorite genre on any network. But the best comedy of the year wasn't one of them, it was NBC's quirky but hysterical workplace comedy Superstore. I don't feel like it's exaggerating to say that Superstore is the true heir to The Office with a group of misfit but lovable employees and a dense, but well-meaning boss. It had many great episodes and wasn't afraid to occasionally mix in some heart. It had a great sophomore season.

RUNNER-UP: The Middle (ABC)

BEST RETURNING DRAMA
Chicago Med (NBC) - I have said for years that Chicago Fire is underrated when it comes to critical acclaim and I stand by that statement, but now I would say the entire Chicago franchise (except for the underwhelming Chicago Justice) maybe fits into that statement after the very strong second season of Chicago Med. My history with medical dramas is that I almost always like them at first but lose interest quickly. So the fact that I'm still very invested in Chicago Med is telling. It has great characters and intense stories that keep me engaged. A particular standout all season and especially end was Oliver Platt.

RUNNER-UP: Chicago Fire (NBC)

THE "REVENGE" AWARD (BIGGEST SEASON TWO DISAPPOINTMENT)
The Catch (ABC) - The Catch has been an odd show for me. I watched the premiere and was underwhelmed and didn't stick with it. Then I binged the first season later on and ended up really liking it. So I was cautiously optimistic about the second season, but it ended up being a big disappointment and I gave up on it after two episodes. I think the retooling into a rom-com did not work for this show and it really just couldn't ever quite figure it all out as far as what it wanted to be. It was a promising idea but ultimately a misfire from Shondaland.

THE "I'M ALMOST DONE WITH YOU" AWARD
Modern Family (ABC) - So I understand why it happened, but I was pretty disappointed to hear that Modern Family had been renewed for two more seasons. Why you ask? Well, because I have felt like its been a chore watching this show recently but because I loved it so much at one point, I feel the urge to see it through. But it has gone from being a brilliant comedy to an inconsistent one to a flat out shell of what it was. It reminds me of the end of The Office. I don't think I laughed once at the show the whole season, the characters have all become caricatures of themselves. And unlike The Office, there was no cast upheaval. It just isn't as good anymore. One more season I may have seen it through, but two? I think I might just choose to be done and check back in for the series finale whenever that is. Last year, How to Get Away with Murder "won" this award and I did in fact give it up, so we'll see what happens.

THE "BIGGEST TEASE" AWARD
Speechless (ABC)
- I was a big fan of Speechless early on. I thought the pilot was brilliant and I enjoyed the early episodes. But about halfway through the season, I found that I was barely paying attention when I was watching it and ultimately, I gave it up and pulled it from my regular viewing rotation. I don't know what happened because I love the premise, but I think I just find the family pretty unlikable and I do not enjoy Minnie Driver in the mother role. I did watch the season finale and decided that maybe I'll give it one more chance next season, but for now it was a tease that didn't blossom into a great show.

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...

DECADE IN REVIEW: The Best Comedies of the 2010s

During the month of December, I will be looking back at the decade that was the 2010s on TV. I will be sharing my favorite sitcoms, dramas, the best episodes, the best performances and the worst shows of the decade. To be eligible for this list, a show had to air the majority of its episodes in the 2010s. However, for the rankings and determination, all episodes were taken into account, including ones that may have aired before 2010. I will also preface that there are comedies that have aired this decade that I haven't watched yet so this is the best of what I have watched. To be fair, that preface is more true for dramas. There's not a ton of unwatched comedies sitting in my Netflix or Amazon watchlist. So here are my Top 10 comedies of the 2010s! Close Calls:  Master of None (Netflix) - An inconsistent but occasionally fascinating commentary on many life issues done so with innovative storytelling. The Good Place (NBC) - A show that aims high with a fascinating premis...
