On Halloween night, ABC started off with Scared Shrekless which did alright but may have been competing with Trick or Treating. At 8:30pm, a 90 minute episode of Dancing with the Stars was down nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo for a series low in the demo despite not airing in the lower HUT 8:00 half hour. This was a somewhat disappointing performance but Halloween could have played a factor. At 10pm, Castle was up a strong 1.8 million viewers and three tenths in the demo despite the lower lead-in. The total viewer count is the best since the season premiere.

Over on CBS, the demos took a hit which could have been partly attributed to Halloween. At 8pm, How I Met Your Mother was up seven tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo with a Halloween episode. At 8:30pm, 2 Broke Girls was down two tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo as it continues to be fall's hottest new comedy. At 9pm, Two and a Half Men took a big hit as it was down 1.4 million viewers and eight tenths in the demo for a season low. Last week, it looked like it had stabilized at a great number but this week was another big fall. Now it is performing where it was at this point last year which is still not bad at all after all the turmoil. At 9:30pm, Mike & Molly followed suit but not as much as it was down seven tenths in viewers and half a demo point for a season low. At 10pm, Hawaii Five-0 was down a tenth in viewers and the demo, once again winning the demo for the hour.

NBC just can't get anything right on Monday nights. At 8pm, The Sing Off was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo for another season low. I thought this show might be at least on the map against Dancing with the Stars, but it's not. The momentum this show was building in Decembers has evaporated. At 10pm, the series premiere of newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams did absolutely nothing, debuting well below The Playboy Club's series premiere numbers. After these numbers and the Prime Suspect repeat numbers, Playboy isn't looking all that bad. NBC will probably let this ride out until Smash premieres in February though.

Finally on FOX, Terra Nova started off and was down 1.7 million viewers and seven tenths in the demo from its last airing two weeks ago. It hit a series low and while they might try to attribute it to Halloween, something tells me this show is beginning a slide that will probably spell its end after the 13 episode season is over. At 9pm, House was down 1.6 million viewers and six tenths in the demo, hitting a series low. It is time for this long running medical drama to call it quits after this season.

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
