There were several new shows on Tuesday night and not surprisingly NBC was on top. America's Got Talent was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. The Voice's final performance night was up six tenths in viewers and even in the demo. It's somewhat surprising it didn't go up more but it was still the top demo draw by a mile. Elsewhere, ABC was all new. Wipeout was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo but it is not nearly as strong as it was last summer, perhaps from overexposure. 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo from last week's premiere which is a great hold from its debut. Combat Hospital was down seven tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo, not displaying as good a hold for it second week. FOX's MasterChef was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo from last Tuesday's episode.

There wasn't much new at all on a sleepy Sunday night. Aside from newsmagazines, the only ratings to really report were for the season premiere of The Marriage Ref and it wasn't much. While the rating wasn't horrible, it didn't do anything to deserve a third season once this summer is done. There was news today of a lawsuit involving the show but that's unlikely to make it more relevant. NBC will give it this summer run and that will likely be it.

ABC was all new on Thursday night with its new summer lineup. The official summer premiere of Wipeout was solid in the 8pm hour but below last year's premiere as ABC has really overexposed this show with the winter and spring editions, probably somewhat blunting its summer power. At 9pm, the series premiere of the heavily promoted Expedition: Impossible got off to a solid start, holding pretty much all of Wipeout's audience. At 10pm, the season premiere of Rookie Blue was ok for a scripted drama but below last year's series premiere numbers of 7.2 million viewers and a 1.9 demo. Elsewhere, NBC's Love Bites was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo as it continues to sink lower. FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was even in viewers but down two tenths in the demo as it continues to sink lower and had new competition from Wipeout.

PILOT REVIEW: Expedition: Impossible
EXPEDITION: IMPOSSIBLE
Hosted by Dave Salmoni
Created by Mark Burnett, Directed by Mike Murray
Expedition: Impossible is a new reality competition on ABC from reality guru Mark Burnett and it is basically The Amazing Race but with teams of three confined to one country. It has the feel of a knockoff and it's not as entertaining as the comparable show but it's decent enough for summer filler. The show starts with 13 teams of three and there are of course the many "storylines" to follow - the city girls, the country boys, the team with the blind man, the gay guy team, the team with the old man, etc. As usual some of these teams are entertaining while others are just plain annoying.
This edition of Expedition: Impossible takes place in Morocco which of course includes the sweltering desert and camel rides. While this is certainly a challenging expedition, there just wasn't enough excitement or drama in this show. They tried to hype the drama of the losing team and they tried to get the viewers to attach emotionally to a few teams but the whole show felt like a bore. It was just hard to stay interested for the whole hour, much less the entire summer. This show is probably just for those who really miss The Amazing Race during the summer. It's nothing special.

NBC's results edition of The Voice was down from performance night numbers but America's Got Talent was up two tenths in the demo despite being down 1.8 million viewers from its last Wednesday's edition two weeks ago. FOX had So You Think You Can Dance which was down 1.1 million viewers and four tenths in the demo. The only other new show was a Primetime Nightline special on ABC which didn't do much.

All networks started the night off with the address from President Obama. Some joined repeats in progress on the east coast while others started new episodes when the speech ended.
PILOT REVIEW: Combat Hospital
COMBAT HOSPITAL
Starring: Michelle Borth, Luke Mably, Terry Chen, Arnold Pinnock, Hamza Jeetooa, Gord Rand, Ellen Wong, Anne Bedian, Karan Oberoi, Dwain Murphy, Trenna Keating, with Deborah Kara Unger, and Elias Koteas
Created by Jinder Oujla-Chambers, Douglas Steinberg, and Daniel Petrie Jr.
Written by Jinder Oujla-Chambers, Douglas Steinberg, and Daniel Petrie Jr., Directed by Iain B. MacDonald
Combat Hospital is a new summer scripted medical drama on ABC that is a cheap option for them since it is made in Canada and simulcast there. It centers on a group of military doctors at a hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2006. In many ways it hearkens back to M*A*S*H as it has some banter mixed in with the horrors of war. However, this show is more serious than M*A*S*H and not as good, though it really isn't bad for a summer drama.
The main characters who arrive on the base in the pilot - Rebecca Gordon (Michelle Borth) and Bobby Trang (Terry Chen) - are both very likable but there wasn't much to them yet, particularly Trang. Still they make for good protagonists. The supporting cast was solid too. The show occasionally veered into unnecessary banter but as far as medical shows go, this one wasn't too bad in that department. What really helps this show is the setting. Unlike the dreadful Off the Map, this isn't just Grey's Anatomy set in an exotic location. This show explores the horrors of war as the doctors and nurses never know when the next batch of wounded warriors will come in. This would be a decent show for the season, much less the summer. It's nice to have some solid scripted programming in the sea of repeats and cheap reality on network TV.

ABC premiered its new summer lineup on Thursday night and saw decent but not spectacular results. A Wipeout summer sneak peek didn't do much but new game show 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show built on Wipeout in viewers and the demo as it was off to a solid start. But will people keep coming back for a show like that? At 10pm, new scripted drama Combat Hospital premiered to total viewers but dropped a lot in the demo. Of course it's a summer scripted show so there's not much hope for it anyway. NBC had its powerful competition combo. America's Got Talent was down six tenths in viewers but up a tenth in the demo while The Voice was down two tenths in viewers and the demo in advance of next week's finale which is surprising but it was still easily the demo winner on the night. FOX's MasterChef was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show
101 WAYS TO LEAVE A GAME SHOW
Directed by J. Rupert Thompson
Hosted by Jeff Sutphen
I knew going in that 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show would be nothing more than mindless summer unscripted programming which is commonplace on broadcast TV these days. However, I choose to review each new show because you never know when the next big hit will come - remember Survivor and American Idol started as quiet summer shows.
But this show is not going to be that. It's utterly stupid. In fact, it's one of the stupidest summer shows I've come across in a long time and that's saying something. I don't know where to begin to criticize this show but I'll start with the premise. It's not a horrible idea on paper but it just didn't pan out. It wants to be in the vein of Wipeout because of its outrageousness but it's not nearly as entertaining. We all know that these death-defying stunts will turn out fine so there's not much fun in watching them. And did we really need to see each exit three times? Plus we've seen everything on TV already on one show or another and some of these stunts seemed quite lame. The questions weren't very interesting either.
But this show could have been saved to an extent with a likable host and/or contestants. This show accomplished neither. Host Jeff Sutphen is incredibly annoying. He's snarky and tries so hard to be funny that it's almost hard to watch. And the contestants are even worse. They are so heavily coached that they don't even seem like real people. So much time is spent on banter with contestants who leave in the blink of an eye. It seems like this show took all the bad cliches about reality/game shows and made them worse. It's not mindless summer fun at all, it's really bad and stupid. Don't waste your time like I wasted mine.

After lackluster ratings for the final series, Game 7 ended up being quite strong showing that maybe there is still an audience for the NHL. FOX had a new So You Think You Can Dance which was up a tenth in viewers but down two tenths in the demo. The only other new show was a news special on ABC which was above last week's news special about Reality TV.

FOX's MasterChef was the only other new show on the night which was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo from last week's premiere. ABC was on top obviously on Sunday night as the Dallas Mavericks claimed the NBA title over the Miami Heat (and the cities of Dallas AND Cleveland rejoiced). It was up nicely from recent games but below last year's final. CBS's Tony Awards telecast was up slightly from last year but it's never a huge ratings draw. It was led into by 60 Minutes which was down a bit from last week's repeat. Everything on NBC and FOX was in repeats but most managed to beat the Tonys in the demo.

CBS had Flashpoint which was down nine tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. NBC had Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals which did not have many total viewers but was dominant in the demo... with a 1.6. Friday nights in the summer are pretty pathetic ratings-wise. ABC dominated on Thursday night with Game 5 of the NBA Finals. It was the best performance yet and that number will likely go up again tomorrow with Dallas having a chance to claim the title. Not much else was new. NBC's Love Bites was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo from last week's premiere. It was still incredibly low but had the best performance of NBC show that night. Finally, FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was down nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo as it took a hit against the NBA Finals.

NBC was on top on Wednesday with America's Got Talent, which had a strong Wednesday debut. This is NBC's most consistent performer in the summer or in season. It was preceded by a new Minute to Win It which was slightly above its performance in the regular season. FOX aired So You Think You Can Dance which was down 1.3 million viewers and three tenths in the demo from last week thanks in part to the competition from Talent. The only other new show was a special edition of 20/20 on Reality TV that was hardly noticed.

ABC had its best showing yet on Tuesday night from the NBA Finals. With the Mavericks tying things up, the finals are guaranteed to at least go through Game 6. NBC had another great night with its strong combo of America's Got Talent and The Voice. Talent was down 2.4 million viewers and six tenths in the demo from its two hour premiere last week but still very strong. The Voice had its first live show and was down 2.1 million viewers and three tenths in the demo. This show is a huge demo powerhouse and it put up a great showing against the NBA. Finally, FOX had another new episode of MasterChef which was up slightly from its Monday premiere but still below last year's levels.

ABC had a solid Monday night with its summer reality combo. The Bachelorette was up nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo, rebounding a bit from last week's drop. This remains a strong summer option for ABC. At 10pm, the second episode of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition was down 1.4 million viewers and two tenths in the demo. This isn't a great hold for Week 2 but it will be interesting to see if it can hold up at these levels. If it can, it will be fine. If it can't, it could be in trouble.
NBC had a new episode from the cancelled Law & Order: LA which was down two tenths in viewers and the demo from last week. FOX had the second season premiere of MasterChef which premiered to weak ratings. If it drops from these premiere numbers, it may not even be a great option for the summer. Last summer, it was regularly getting a 2 or above in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: Love Bites
LOVE BITES
Starring: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg
Created by Cindy Chupack
Written by Cindy Chupack, Directed by Marc Buckland
Love Bites is a quirky new comedy anthology from NBC that was originally slated to be on the fall schedule last September. However, numerous backstage problems led it to become a summer burnoff for the peacock network which is too bad because there is some promise here. In many ways a 2011 version of Love American Style, Bites follows characters through a series of vignettes that are loosely connected by a theme. The pilot focused on three stores - a girl pretending to be a virgin to make a guy interested, a man losing his job and having trouble in his sex life with his wife, and a married man whose fantasy of being with Jennifer Love Hewitt almost comes true on a plane.
There are strong adult themes in this show but its layered in a very light escapist tone. The show is an interesting mix of nostalgia and hipness. The show is not groundbreaking but it is unlike anything on TV right now with its very simple stand-alone stories. The cast is strong - regulars Becki Newton and Greg Grunberg were interesting and solid while there was a strong guest cast including Jennifer Love Hewitt as herself in a bizarre storyline. The show is nicely produced and all three stories were strong in the pilot even if there wasn't much substance to them.
The show is pretty much doomed by being a summer burnoff and that was confirmed by weak pilot ratings. But why didn't NBC try this show during the season? It's not like they were full of hits and had no room for it. It may not have worked but it was worth a shot. As it is, there is a likable breezy summer show that will be nice to have if you're interesting in watching first run scripted programming on the broadcast networks. This show had some bad luck along the way and it's too bad it never really got a chance.

FOX was also new from 8-9pm with So You Think You Can Dance which was down 1.4 million viewers and four tenths in the demo from last week's premiere as the NBA Finals was certainly tougher competition. The only other new show was the series premiere of the long-delayed Love Bites which premiered to a pitiful 2.6 million viewers and 1.0 demo. When a show gets pushed back as long as this did, it's usually doomed but these numbers confirm that. NBC will probably let the show run its course this summer though as they did last summer with 100 Questions.

ABC was on top on Thursday with Game 2 of the NBA Finals which was on par with Game 1 on Tuesday night.

Wednesday was full of repeats except for NBC and FOX. The Stanley Cup Finals on NBC aren't nearly as popular as championship games from the other big sports but still probably better in the demo than a regular Wednesday in the summer would get. FOX aired So You Think You Can Dance on Wednesday for the first time this summer. It was below its premiere ratings last Thursday but still very strong and easily the demo champ of the night.

ABC had a good night from Game 1 of the NBA Finals, which was strong. However, NBC was the big winner with a stunning debut for America's Got Talent and huge growth for The Voice. Talent premiered above last year's numbers to absolutely stellar summer numbers. In fact, NBC can't get these kind of numbers from any show in the regular season. Will NBC ever try it during the official season? At 10pm, The Voice benefited from the huge and compatible lead-in as well as not competing with Dancing with the Stars and surged a massive 5.9 million viewers and 1.1 in the demo. NBC has itself quite the Tuesday combination here. The only other original program was the series finale of the cancelled Traffic Light on FOX which went out with a whimper.
