Here's a look at the Top 5 TV news stories of the week!
It was a pretty quiet week as far as TV news with things like a potential Writer's Strike and Upfronts season still on the horizon but quiet at the moment. So, I guess the biggest news is the official cancellation of The Resident on FOX. The show has quietly become one of FOX's longer running shows (not counting animation) as it soldiered through six seasons and 107 episodes since its debut in January 2018. After only receiving a 13 episode order for its sixth season and the report that its set pieces were being sold off, this was widely expected. The medical drama was a solid utility player for FOX since its debut but it never really made the leap to hit status. With the news that the show was cancelled, it was also reported that series lead Matt Czuchry (formerly of The Good Wife) will be joining the next season of FX's American Horror Story.
Randall Pearson and his creator are teaming up again. Almost a year after This is Us ended its acclaimed run on NBC, creator Dan Fogelman and star Sterling K. Brown are joining forces for a new Hulu series. The details are vague but it is reported to be a thriller that would have Brown playing the head of security for a former president. The premise is very different from This is Us and Fogelman has had more success writing relationship dramas but they were obviously a strong pair so I'm curious to hear more about this project as it gets developed more.
After just a week, Apple TV+ renewed its new dramedy The Big Door Prize for a second season. The series debuted with three episodes last week and will release weekly on Wednesdays through early May. Starring Chris O'Dowd, the series is about a small town that is upended when a machine mysteriously appears that promises to reveal everyone's life potential. The series got mixed to positive reviews and I've enjoyed what I've seen so far but I was surprised to see it get such a quick renewal since it hasn't seemed like its cut through yet.
#4 - NEWS FROM THE BREAK
There was a lot of TV news during the two weeks this blog was on a break. A brief rundown included renewals for The Night Agent on Netflix (after less than a week!), Grey's Anatomy (for Season 20!) on ABC, freshmen Accused and Alert on FOX, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ and Blue Bloods on CBS for a 14th season after the main cast agreed to reduce their salaries to keep the show going. Meanwhile, Grown-ish on Freeform and You on Netflix will end with their upcoming seasons and Showtime cancelled The L Word: Generation Q.
#5 - SCRIPTED PREMIERES THIS WEEK
Here's a look at this week's scripted premieres, a pretty quiet week.
Today: Hulu has the premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things. The limited series is based on a popular book and stars Kathryn Hahn. It also comes from Liz Tigelaar, who had the successful TV adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere on the streamer around this time three years ago. Freevee has the premiere of docu-comedy Jury Duty starring James Marsden.
Wednesday: Freeform has the second season premiere of Single Drunk Female. The series, which was last seen in March 2022, didn't really break through during its first season but will get a second chance.
Thursday: Netflix has the premiere of Florida Man, a limited action series starring Edgar Ramirez and Anthony LaPaglia.
My pick for the week:
I am going with Tiny Beautiful Things. I like Liz Tigelaar's work and I like Kathryn Hahn so I'm hopeful about this one. I might check out Florida Man if reviews are good and I don't really have an opinion of Jury Duty. I didn't stick with Single Drunk Female in the first season so I probably won't check back in.
Check back next week for a new week of blog posts!
