THE FRIDAY FIVE: Top 5 TV News Stories of the Week Ending 11/11/22

Here's a look at the Top 5 TV news stories of the week!

#1 - MIDSEASON PLANS FOR ABC
It was a busy Monday as three broadcast networks revealed their midseason plans. There is no particular order of importance so I just went alphabetical. ABC announced premiere dates for three new shows. Procedural drama Will Trent will air on Tuesday nights at 10pm starting January 3. It will follow a colonized night for The Rookie with the original series moving to Tuesdays at 8pm and The Rookie: Feds sliding up an hour to 9pm. Unscripted series The Parent Test will air Thursdays at 9pm while the Thursday dramas are on hiatus. It will also get a preview in December. The Gina Rodriguez comedy Not Dead Yet will premiere with two episodes on February 8 and then settle into its regular Wednesday 9:30pm timeslot as Home Economics will wrap up its season after 13 episodes. That same night, A Million Little Things returns for its fifth and final season as the show will officially wrap things up (which was expected). Finally, the Milo Ventimiglia spy drama The Company You Keep takes over the Sunday 10pm slot starting February 19, the same night American Idol returns for a new season. Also notable was The Wonder Years being pushed to summer.

#2 - MIDSEASON PLANS FOR FOX
FOX had been trickling out some midseason plans but revealed them all on Monday. The new Monday lineup will be a second season of Fantasy Island and the new procedural drama Alert. Alert will get a post-NFL tryout on January 8. Two weeks later, after NFL playoff games, FOX will debut anthology drama Accused. That will air on Tuesday nights following a new night for 9-1-1: Lone Star. Wednesdays remain unscripted with Celebrity Name That Tune and Special Forces: World's Toughest Test. As already announced, Next Level Chef will get the coveted post-Super Bowl timeslot. It will then be sent to the wolves on Thursday nights at 8pm followed by the new Joel McHale comedy Animal Control leading into Call Me Kat. FOX's top drama, 9-1-1 as well as The Masked Singer will return later in the spring.

#3 - MIDSEASON PLANS FOR NBC
NBC joined the trifecta with Monday announcements and their own midseason plans. Another winter edition of America's Got Talent, this one called America's Got Talent: All-Stars premieres on January 2. January 17 marks the launch of the new Night Court revival, which will air two episodes on January 17 to lead into the two hour series finale of New Amsterdam. A week later, the second season of American Auto will take over the 8:30pm slot. On February 19, Magnum P.I. officially makes the move to NBC and a new night, Sundays, at 9pm to lead into the new drama Found. Finally, The Voice will return on March 6 with That's My Jam returning the next night. Missing from the NBC midseason schedule is Grand Crew, which will likely be held to late in the season or the summer.

#4 - "THE WATCHER" AND "MONSTER" RENEWED
It took several years but the insane deal Ryan Murphy made with Netflix is finally paying dividends. After several shows that didn't really break through like The Politician, Halston, Hollywood and Ratched, Murphy made up for lost time with two of the biggest hits of the fall: Dahmer and The Watcher. Both have now been renewed by Netflix. The Dahmer series will take part of its name (Monster) and turn it into an anthology with each season focusing on a different notorious killer. The Watcher was also renewed despite being conceived as a limited series. It's not clear if it will be a continuation or another anthology.

#5 - SCRIPTED PREMIERES THIS WEEK
Here's a look at this week's scripted premieres, a busy week!

Today: Amazon has the premiere of the Emily Blunt limited series The English. Blunt is a big name and there was some early hype about this but the hype seems to have gone down as the premiere has gotten closer. Amazon also has Mammals, a dark comedy starring James Corden, who hasn't exactly been the internet's favorite person lately. Apple TV+ has the third season premiere of Mythic Quest, which has already been renewed for a fourth season.

Sunday: One of TV's biggest hits, Yellowstone, returns for a fifth season on Paramount Network. The series has defied all logic by being a giant basic cable hit in an era where cable networks are struggling. Paramount+ has the series premiere of Tulsa King, which will also air its first two episodes after Yellowstone on Paramount Network. Tulsa King marks the first regular TV series role for legendary film actor Sylvester Stallone and it has received a ton of promotion.

Wednesday: Disney+ has the limited series premiere of The Santa Clauses, which puts Tim Allen back into the Santa suit he wore for three movies in the 1990s and 2000s. The first two movies are beloved while the third was not a critical success. It remains to be seen if this franchise is still potent enough to warrant a limited series. Freevee has the second season premiere of Leverage: Redemption.

Thursday: Netflix has the third and final season premiere of Dead to Me, which was last seen back in May 2020. Its third season was delayed due to star Christina Applegate's MS diagnosis but its first two seasons were in the Emmy conversation. It's been so long, we'll see if it still has any muscle. Hulu has the premiere of limited series Fleishman is in Trouble. The drama features an all-star cast including Claire Danes, Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan and Adam Brody. It could be an awards player if all goes well. HBO Max has the second season of The Sex Lives of College Girls, which was well received but didn't get into the conversation much for its first season. BET+ has the third season premiere of The First Wives Club.

My pick for the week:
There's a lot that I'm interested in this week but I'm not sure how I'll ultimately feel about some of them. I would say my most anticipated show is Dead to Me. I really liked the first two seasons and I'm excited to see how it ends. I also am quite intrigued by Fleishman is in Trouble and I did enjoy the first season of The Sex Lives of College Girls though I didn't think it was anything really special. I've never gotten into Yellowstone and Mythic Quest has been on my list to watch for forever. I'll probably check out at least one episode of The English and Tulsa King to see if either is for me, but I have my doubts. I'm not a fan of The Santa Clause movies so the show doesn't interest me.
