THE FRIDAY FIVE: Top 5 TV News Stories of the Week Ending 10/21/22

Here's a look at the Top 5 TV news stories of the week!

#1 - NFL & AMAZON ADDING BLACK FRIDAY GAME
The NFL is expanding its partnership with Amazon. Despite mixed reviews for their Thursday Night Football takeover this year, the NFL will add a Black Friday game to Amazon's slate in 2023. It is no surprise that Amazon wants this, they are already a big player in the post-Thanksgiving market and could even be trying to stick another dagger into in-person Black Friday shopping. But the bigger reason is likely another new window for the NFL which continues to expand its presence on days that used to never carry NFL games. There are already three Thanksgiving games and now we'll get a Friday game before the rest of the slate comes on Sunday and Monday. It will be a pretty thin Sunday slate that weekend. It might seem like overkill, but that never seems to hurt the NFL that much.

#2 - FULL SEASON ORDERS FOR CBS DRAMAS
Following a full season order for Quantum Leap, CBS has given full season orders to its three freshman dramas: Sunday cop drama East New York, Friday night's surprise success Fire Country and Thursday dramedy So Help Me Todd. No word yet on how many episodes each will have to constitute a "full season." The three new dramas have been billed as the most watched new shows although that's not saying much in an environment where Broadcast TV is mostly an afterthought. Still, all three shows have shown signs of life and CBS only has True Lies on the bench right now so it's not a surprise that they are giving these young shows a chance to grow. Of the three, Fire Country seems like it has the most long term potential as it has fit like a glove into their Friday night lineup.

#3 - "P-VALLEY" RENEWED FOR SEASON 3
It took awhile but Starz has renewed P-Valley for a third season. The Mississippi-set strip club drama has received lots of critical acclaim but is not widely viewed nor has it been able to break into awards conversations despite the critical love. There was a two year gap between the first two seasons so we'll see how long it takes for the third season to get on the air. I absolutely loved the first season, nominating it for many Benjamonster Awards in 2021. I also enjoyed the second season that aired this past summer though I thought the first season was stronger.

#4 - "AS WE SEE IT" CANCELLED
I'm happy about the renewal for P-Valley but sad to hear the news that Amazon has cancelled As We See It after one season. The dramedy about three adults with autism living together also received high marks from critics but struggled to break through after its January 2022 premiere. I absolutely loved the series and nominated it for Outstanding Drama Series for my 2022 Benjamonster Awards. It was so good at realistically depicting autism in a heartfelt and relatable way. It's a shame it won't continue.

#5 - SCRIPTED PREMIERES THIS WEEK
Here's a look at this week's scripted premieres!

Today: Netflix premieres the limited series From Scratch, starring Zoe Saldana as an artist who falls in love with a chef in Italy. This series doesn't seem to have a lot of buzz. Amazon has the premiere of sci-fi drama The Peripheral, a series set in the future where technology has altered society. Apple TV+ has the second season premiere of Acapulco, which didn't get much attention for its first season a year ago.

Tuesday: Netflix premieres Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, a horror anthology series that will premiere two episodes a day for four days in a unique release model. The Oscar winning Del Toro is directly responsible for two of the eight stories while he has his hands in all of them and will narrate the series.

Thursday: Netflix premieres the sixth season of Big Mouth, it has already been renewed for a seventh season.

My pick for the week:
Another week will limited options for me but I'm curious enough about Cabinet of Curiosities to probably give it a try. Maybe I'll try From Scratch too, but that's not high on the priority list.

Check back Tuesday for a new week of blog posts!

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2017-18 Miscellaneous Awards

As usual, I am ending the season with a few miscellaneous awards. The blog will be quiet this summer but I will continue to do the week ahead posts with broadcast TV news as it happens this summer. Then I'll be back for previews, pilot reviews, and more in the fall! BEST RETURNING COMEDY Superstore (NBC) - Superstore was awarded my "Best Returning Comedy" last year, but it only got better in season three. The funniest ensemble on TV took another step forward with some truly hilarious moments (the season premiere, the Golden Globes party, and the Christmas episode to name a few) and some major plot points moving forward. It also has the potential to be surprisingly sentimental at times. I think back to the first year of the show and how I felt like it had so many funny elements but didn't always bring it completely together. Well now it does on a weekly basis and it is one of those shows that just seems to be in the sweet spot of what will hopefully be a long run. ...

EPISODE GUIDES: Happy Days Season Five (Part 1)

On Thursdays, I take a detailed and critical look at a TV show by season. Today I am looking at Season 5 (Part 1) of  Happy Days ! HAPPY DAYS: SEASON FIVE 1977-1978 27 episodes Season Five is the year where Fonzie infamously jumps the shark. It happens at the beginning of the season and while  Happy Days  does eventually decline in quality, it is not this season. In fact, this season graded out slightly higher than the previous season even though it doesn't feel as strong. I think that's because there's not a lot of outright stinkers in this season. It's a very solid season with the show continuing to hum along. There are some signs of the troubles to come but it doesn't happen on a regular basis in the fifth season. Starring Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham  (27 episodes) Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli  (27 episodes) Tom Bosley as Howard Cunningham  (27 episodes) Marion Ross as Marion Cunningham  (27 episodes) Anson Williams as Potsie Webber  ...

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...
