#2 - CREATIVE ARTS EMMY WINS
The Creative Arts Emmys were held last weekend (to be condensed in a special airing on FXX on Saturday night). Sometimes they can be a sign of things to come and other times, it can be easy to read too much into them. If the Creative Arts Emmys are to be seen as a harbinger for what's to come at the Emmys, then Succession should be looking over its back at Squid Game, The White Lotus may dominate, Comedy Series is anyone's game and Euphoria may be stronger than anticipated. I did not change a lot of predictions after the Creative Arts Emmys, but I'm really nervous about being very wrong in Drama and Comedy because it wouldn't shock me to see a near sweep from Squid Game and I wouldn't be shocked if Ted Lasso severely underperforms. I still feel good about giving a lot of love to The White Lotus.

#3 - "THE HANDMAID'S TALE" WILL END WITH SEASON SIX
Hulu announced this week that The Handmaid's Tale has been renewed for a sixth and final season. The flagship drama series for the streamer begins its fifth season next week. I mentioned in my Fall Preview that this show needs to look for an offramp so I'm glad to see it winding down. The fourth season was pretty solid but I think there's only so much story left to tell. The series has been a huge hit for Hulu, running much longer than many streaming dramas and earning the distinction of being the first drama to break through and win Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys, back in 2017.

#4 - "THE CROWN" PAUSES TO HONOR QUEEN ELIZABETH II
Following the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 and after a 70+ year reign in England, The Crown on Netflix announced it was temporarily shuttering production out of respect. The series is currently filming its sixth and final season while the fifth season, which sees Imelda Staunton take over the Queen role, is expected to premiere in November. Creator Peter Morgan originally said he wanted to end at an earlier point in Queen Elizabeth II's life, perhaps when William & Kate got married. But I think this news might make him change his tune.

#5 - SCRIPTED PREMIERES THIS WEEK
We're still a week away from the traditional Broadcast TV "Premiere Week" but there's still a lot coming in the next week!

Today: Netflix has the fifth season premiere of Cobra Kai. The series was a surprise Outstanding Comedy Series nominee at the Emmys in the barren 2021 COVID year. While it won't return to the Emmy conversation, it remains a popular series on the streamer, which rescued it when YouTube stopped doing scripted originals. Apple TV+ premieres the third season of Central Park, which has always had a fair amount of critical love but hasn't really broken into the larger conversation much.

Sunday: FOX premieres its long delayed country music drama Monarch after the first NFL Sunday of the season. The lead-in should help it get off to a decent start before it heads to its regular Tuesday lineup which will be much, much more difficult. Showtime has the premiere of American Gigolo, which stars current internet favorite Jon Bernthal and is based on the 1980 movie of the same name though set in present day. Starz premieres the period drama The Serpent Queen about the life of Catherine de' Medici.

Wednesday: Hulu has the fifth season premiere of The Handmaid's Tale. The show got back into the Emmy conversation in 2021 after a down year in 2020 and remains one of Hulu's more popular offerings even as it gets up there in years. As mentioned above, it was renewed this week for a sixth and final season.

Thursday: FX premieres the final season of Atlanta, just a few months after the long-delayed third season aired. Peacock has the premiere of the supernatural Young Adult drama Vampire Academy, which feels like it could be on The CW, or at least the old version of The CW.

My pick for the week:
I am going with The Handmaid's Tale. As I mentioned in my Fall Preview post earlier this week, I really liked how the fourth season ended so I'm curious to see how it picks things up. I'm hoping it doesn't fall back into the bad patterns of the second and third season. I'm also curious about Monarch and will give it a try. I might check out American Gigolo depending on the buzz.

Check back next week for a new week of blog posts!
