TOP 10 TUESDAY: Top 10 TV Musical Performances

Tuesdays are Top 10 Tuesdays where I count down a topic in the TV realm. This week is Top 10 TV Musical Performances!

Close Calls
"I Am a Fine Musician" - The Dick Van Dyke Show
"Steam Heat" - The Mary Tyler Moore Show
"Time to Change" - The Brady Bunch

10. "Night After Night" - Laverne & Shirley
Lenny & Squiggy are not great performers (of course) but this is a pretty funny performance on Laverne & Shirley where David L. Lander and Michael McKean just go for it. I also enjoy Squiggy's introduction that the song is about "two nights in a row."

9. "Lazy Scranton" - The Office
The Office always did a great job with pop culture parodies and one of their most elaborate was the "Lazy Scranton" video that parodied Saturday Night Live's "Lazy Sunday." It was obvious the cast had a great time doing it and pretty fun to watch.

8. "Do the Fonzie" - Happy Days
This is so, so cheesy but just fun and I have great memories of loving this as a kid. It's insanely catchy and really a fun time especially when the ultra cool Fonzie joins in on the dance. Looking back at it now I recognize how silly it is but that doesn't take away from the fun of it.

7. "One Less Angel" - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Some of the most stunning scenes in the third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel where the ones where Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) was performing. His "One Less Angel" is a fictional hit that really could have been a huge hit in the 1960s, it's a great song.

6. "I Love Lucy" - I Love Lucy
The first of three songs from I Love Lucy on the list, Ricky sang the title song to her for her birthday. It was the first time we heard lyrics to the iconic theme song and it came at a great moment after Lucy was convinced no one remembered her birthday.

5. "Blow You a Kiss in the Wind" - Bewitched
"Blow You a Kiss in the Wind" was part of one of the weirdest and grooviest episodes of Bewitched and that's what made it such an interesting moment. Elizabeth Montgomery really lets loose as Serena singing an infectious tune.

4. "Carolina in the Morning" - I Love Lucy
This performance is one of the great examples of how great Vivian Vance and William Frawley are. We all know the stories about how they didn't like each other but they are the ultimate professionals with this very endearing performance.

3. "Sunshine Day" - The Brady Bunch
The Brady Kids perform this song as an audition for a TV show and then perform a much more inferior song on the actual competition as the Silver Platters. What a mistake. This song is so cheesy (especially Bobby's part) but it's still a great tune.

2. "I Have Everything But You" - The Dick Van Dyke Show
I'm not actually sure this is the title of the song and couldn't find confirmation anywhere but it is my favorite Rob & Laura performance of many on The Dick Van Dyke Show. The dancing is fantastic and the chemistry is palpable, even in Santa suits.

1. "We're Having A Baby" - I Love Lucy
The story behind this performance is well known. Lucy was supposed to laugh at the end of the song but she and Desi Arnaz were so caught up in the emotion that it brought tears to the eyes of the real life expecting couple. They did another take as originally intended but the very sweet original take is the one they obviously went with.

Tomorrow: A One Season Wonder look at The Betty White Show!

EPISODE GUIDES: That 70s Show Season Seven

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Seven of  That 70s Show ! THAT 70s SHOW: SEASON SEVEN 2004-2005 25 episodes The seventh season of  That 70s Show  is the final season with Topher Grace as a series regular and also the final full season for Ashton Kutcher. Despite still having both of those cast member, the show finds itself flailing especially with Topher Grace's Eric, who is stuck in a terrible arc for most of the season. The show also brings many characters back at one point or another but everything just feels tired. This season actually graded out the worst for me. Even worse than the often maligned final season (more on that next week). Every title this season is named for a Rolling Stones song. Starring Topher Grace as Eric Forman  (25 episodes) Mila Kunis as Jackie Burkhart  (25 episodes) Ashton Kutcher as Michael Kelso  (25 episodes) Danny Masterson as Steven Hyde  (25 e...

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...
