THE WEEK AHEAD: November 27-December 3, 2017

Here is a look at Week #10!

ABC
ABC has a mix of their regular lineup and specials/repeats, as is often the case with December. Dancing with the Stars has ended so Monday has the annual CMA Country Christmas special leading into The Good Doctor, which will air without a Dancing lead-in for the first time. After a full slate of repeats on Tuesday, Wednesday is all new while Thursday has classic special A Charlie Brown Christmas. On Friday is the two hour premiere of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It won't do well by any means, but I don't think it will be a worse option than Once Upon a Time or Marvel's Inhumans.

MONDAY
8:00 CMA Country Christmas (Special)
10:00 The Good Doctor

TUESDAY
8:00 The Middle (Repeat)
8:30 Fresh Off the Boat (Repeat)
9:00 Black-ish (Repeat)
9:30 The Mayor (Repeat)
10:00 Kevin (Probably) Saves the World (Repeat)

WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs
8:30 Speechless
9:00 Modern Family
9:30 American Housewife
10:00 Designated Survivor

THURSDAY
8:00 A Charlie Brown Christmas (Special)
9:00 The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration (Special)

FRIDAY
8:00 Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season Premiere)
10:00 20/20

SATURDAY
8:00 College Football

SUNDAY
7:00 America's Funniest Home Videos (Repeat)
8:00 America's Funniest Home Videos
9:00 Shark Tank (Christmas episode)
10:00 Shark Tank (Repeat)

CBS
CBS has its regular lineup on Monday, Thursday, and Friday this week. Tuesday brings its regular post-Thanksgiving Tuesday lineup of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer-NCIS repeat-Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Both Rudolph and the Fashion Show are always highly rated specials. Wednesday has a Bruno Mars special following two hours of Survivor while Sunday has a 50th Anniversary of The Carol Burnett Show, which will skew old but could do well in total viewers.

MONDAY
8:00 Kevin Can Wait
8:30 Man with a Plan
9:00 Superior Donuts
9:30 9JKL
10:00 Scorpion

TUESDAY
8:00 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (Special)
9:00 NCIS (Repeat)
10:00 The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (Special)

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Survivor
10:00 Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo (Special)

THURSDAY
8:00 The Big Bang Theory

9:00 Mom
9:30 Life in Pieces
10:00 S.W.A.T.

FRIDAY
8:00 MacGyver
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods

SATURDAY
8:00 Kevin Can Wait (Repeat)
8:30 Man with a Plan (Repeat)
9:00 NCIS: New Orleans (Repeat)
10:00 48 Hours

SUNDAY
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special (Special)
10:00 NCIS: Los Angeles (Repeat)

NBC
Like ABC and CBS, NBC has several holiday specials mixed in. With The Brave done for the fall, a Pentatonix special gets the post-Voice slot on Monday. Tuesday is the regular lineup with the fall finale of This is Us followed by week two of the new season of Chicago Med, which did OK last week for its premiere. Wednesday has the always decently rated Christmas in Rockefeller Center which will provide a better lead-in for its crime dramas.

MONDAY
8:00 The Voice
10:00 A Very Pentatonix Christmas (Special)

TUESDAY
8:00 The Voice
9:00 This is Us
10:00 Chicago Med

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Christmas in Rockefeller Center (Special)

10:00 Saturday Night Live (Repeat)

SUNDAY
7:00 Football Night in America
8:30 Sunday Night Football: Philadelphia at Seattle

FOX
FOX has its regular lineup across the board except for Monday, which is in repeats. They have more episodes left from their baseball preemptions so that helps explain why they can air most of their regular lineup.

MONDAY
8:00 Lucifer (Repeat)
9:00 The Gifted (Repeat)

8:00 Lethal Weapon
9:00 The Mick
9:30 Brooklyn Nine-Nine

8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 Ghosted
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 The Last Man on Earth

CW

It is Crossover Week on the CW but they are restricting it to two days with Arrow moving over for one night only to air after Supergirl. Last year, this crossover led to big gains for these shows but they don't seem to have the heat they had last year. So I think they'll still go up but not like they did last year. With Arrow airing on Monday, a one off airing of Penn & Teller: Fool Us will air on Thursday. And there are Holiday specials instead of the usual Friday lineup.

MONDAY
8:00 Supergirl
9:00 Arrow

TUESDAY
8:00 The Flash
9:00 DC's Legends of Tomorrow

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Riverdale

FRIDAY
8:00 Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (Special)
9:00 Masters of Illusion: Christmas Magic (Special)

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- FOX has slated Tuesdays at 9pm as the slot for LA to Vegas starting January 2. The Mick moves to 9:30pm while Brooklyn Nine-Nine goes on hiatus. FOX doesn't have a ton of great slots but this is definitely one of their weaker ones so that doesn't seem like a great sign for the new comedy

- In a bigger promotional push, FOX has given its post-NFC Championship Game slot to new drama The Resident. It will premiere on Sunday, January 21 and then settle into a Monday 9pm slot following the end of the first season of The Gifted.

- NBC has renewed The Good Place for a third season. The underdog comedy had a very solid start to its second season and will return in January following NBC's football package. The first season also reportedly did well on Netflix over the summer.

NBC
NBC has the season premiere of Chicago Med on Tuesday night. Given how it often overperformed on Thursday nights last year, it should be an improvement on Law & Order True Crime. TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- The first of a lot of midseason news, FOX announced that The X-Files will return on Wednesday, January 3 at 8pm and will be followed by the Ryan Murphy drama 9-1-1 at 9pm. The X-Files was a huge hit the last time it was seen in the 2015-16 season.

- NBC will premiere Good Girls on Monday, February 26 at 10pm immediately after the new edition of The Voice and one day after the end of the Winter Olympics. They will premiere the highly anticipated new drama Rise on Tuesday, March 13 at 10pm following the season finale of This is Us. It will then take over This is Us's 9pm slot the following week.

- ABC will premiere a game show, Child Support, hosted by Fred Savage on Friday, January 5 at 8pm as a bridge for Once Upon a Time. It will also have Designated Survivor on a hiatus, to be replaced again this year by Match Game, starting January 3.

- ABC has ordered light crime procedural Take Two straight to series from a Castle executive producer and starring Rachel Bilson and Eddie Cibrian. This is the second light procedural ordered straight to series by ABC, joining The Rookie.

- CBS has handed a full season order to S.W.A.T. after just three episodes that only did modestly. They also ordered three more episodes of 9JKL, which doesn't seem to bode well for its long term chances. They did not make any decision on Wisdom of the Crowd yet, but I'd be surprised if it goes beyond its 13 episode order.

QUICK HITS: CBS Midseason Schedule Suggestion

Here are my CBS schedule suggestions! As usual, CBS doesn't have a ton on the bench but they also have some nights that are definitely having trouble. This might be a year they wish they had more shows on the bench.

MONDAYS
8:00 Kevin Can Wait
8:30 Man with a Plan
9:00 By the Book
9:30 Superior Donuts
10:00 Instinct
CBS has tweaked their Monday lineup but the next thing that needs to go is 9JKL, which needs to be cancelled. I don't love the idea of By the Book or Instinct here, but I'm also not high on either of those shows so I guess I'd give them a chance here. I can't imagine they'd be worse offerings than 9JKL and Scorpion.

TUESDAYS
8:00 NCIS
9:00 Bull
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans
I would leave Tuesdays alone. It's arguably the most stable and solid CBS night.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 (Jan) Undercover Boss/(late Feb) Survivor
9:00 SEAL Team
10:00 Criminal Minds
CBS doesn't have an obvious filler for Survivor so I would put a short run of Undercover Boss here. Despite its struggles, SEAL Team has a full season so I'd leave it at 9pm. Criminal Minds has made an OK transition to 10pm.

THURSDAYS
8:00 The Big Bang Theory

8:30 Young Sheldon
9:00 Mom
9:30 Life in Pieces
10:00 (Jan) S.W.A.T./(Mar) Code Black
The Thursday comedy lineup is working well right now so I'd leave it alone. S.W.A.T. has only aired two episodes but I don't think it's going to deserve a back order so this is where I would eventually air the third season of Code Black.

FRIDAYS
8:00 MacGyver
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods
Fridays are lower rated than Tuesdays but still quite solid and stable.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores
9:00 Elementary
10:00 48 Hours
I would even bother with putting Elementary on a different night. It's renewed mainly for syndication reasons. Let it air on Saturdays.

SUNDAYS
7:00 60 Minutes
8:00 NCIS: Los Angeles
9:00 Scorpion
10:00 Madam Secretary
Between its low ratings and the Jeremy Piven scandal, I would cancel Wisdom of the Crowd. I think NCIS: Los Angeles should go back to 8pm and I would try Scorpion at 9pm because it is dying on Monday nights and something needs to be tried.

CANCEL: Wisdom of the Crowd, 9JKL

SAVE FOR SUMMER: The Amazing Race

THE WEEK AHEAD: November 13-19, 2017

Here is a look at Week #8!

ABC
ABC has a bunch of Thanksgiving episodes among their comedies. It is also preempting most of its Sunday lineup for the American Music Awards next Sunday. Before it will be the season finale of The Toy Box, and it should be the series finale too, but we'll see. It will be interesting to see how The Good Doctor does after a week off.

MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 The Good Doctor

TUESDAY
8:00 The Middle (Thanksgiving episode)
8:30 Fresh Off the Boat (Thanksgiving episode)
9:00 Black-ish
9:30 The Mayor
10:00 Kevin (Probably) Saves the World

WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs (Thanksgiving episode)
8:30 Speechless (Thanksgiving episode)
9:00 Modern Family (Thanksgiving episode)
9:30 American Housewife (Thanksgiving episode)

9:00 Scandal
10:00 How to Get Away with Murder

SATURDAY
8:00 College Football

SUNDAY
7:00 The Toy Box (Season Finale)
8:00 2017 American Music Awards

CBS
CBS has already upended its Monday lineup and is bringing back Man with a Plan to the slot it occupied last year. While it won't do great, I think it will be an upgrade on 9JKL's one week in this slot with Kevin Can Wait as a lead-in.

MONDAY
8:00 Kevin Can Wait
8:30 Man with a Plan (Season Premiere)
9:00 Superior Donuts
9:30 9JKL
10:00 Scorpion

TUESDAY
8:00 NCIS
9:00 Bull
10:00 NCIS: New Orleans

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Survivor
9:00 SEAL Team
10:00 Criminal Minds

THURSDAY
8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 Young Sheldon
9:00 Mom
9:30 Life in Pieces
10:00 S.W.A.T.

FRIDAY
8:00 MacGyver
9:00 Hawaii Five-0
10:00 Blue Bloods

SATURDAY
8:00 NCIS: Los Angeles (Repeat)
9:00 48 Hours
10:00 48 Hours

SUNDAY
7:00 NFL Overrun
7:30 60 Minutes
8:30 Wisdom of the Crowd
9:30 NCIS: Los Angeles
10:30 Madam Secretary

NBC
NBC has the season finale of Law & Order True Crime and we'll see if it ends up being the series finale. Obviously if it comes back, it will be a completely different story since it's an anthology.

MONDAY
8:00 The Voice
10:00 The Brave

TUESDAY
8:00 The Voice
9:00 This is Us
10:00 Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders (Season Finale)

WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Blacklist
9:00 The Voice
10:00 Chicago PD

THURSDAY
8:00 Football Night in America
8:20 Thursday Night Football: Tennessee at Pittsburgh

FRIDAY
8:00 Blindspot
9:00 Dateline NBC

SATURDAY
8:00 Will & Grace (Repeat)
8:30 Superstore (Repeat)
9:00 Dateline NBC

SUNDAY
7:00 Football Night in America
8:30 Sunday Night Football: Philadelphia at Dallas

FOX

FOX has its regular lineup all week. They are advertising the premieres of The Four, LA to Vegas, and 9-1-1 being in January so I think we'll get a midseason schedule this week from the network.

MONDAY
8:00 Lucifer
9:00 The Gifted

TUESDAY
8:00 Lethal Weapon
9:00 The Mick
9:30 Brooklyn Nine-Nine

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Empire
9:00 Star

THURSDAY
8:00 Gotham
9:00 The Orville

FRIDAY
8:00 Hell's Kitchen
9:00 The Exorcist

SATURDAY
8:00 College Football

SUNDAY
7:00 Bob's Burgers (Repeat)
7:30 Bob's Burgers (Thanksgiving episode)
8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 Ghosted
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 The Last Man on Earth

CW
The CW has another week with its complete regular lineup. Nothing too exciting!

MONDAY
8:00 Supergirl
9:00 Valor

TUESDAY
8:00 The Flash
9:00 DC's Legends of Tomorrow

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Riverdale
9:00 Dynasty

THURSDAY
8:00 Supernatural
9:00 Arrow

FRIDAY
8:00 Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
9:00 Jane the Virgin

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- The Mick has gotten seven additional episodes ordered to bring its Season 2 order to 20. This is a good sign for the struggling sophomore comedy. It's one that FOX really likes but it hasn't been able to find a large audience.

- Despite low ratings, the CW handed Dynasty a full season order. This isn't shocking because it seemed likely that one of their new freshman dramas were going to get a full season and Dynasty is one of their CBS studio shows which always seem to have more support from the CW. This news probably does not bode well for the other freshman drama Valor.

- NBC revealed that their regular lineup will mostly return the first week of January including bubble shows The Brave and Great News. Taken will have its revamped second season premiere on Friday, January 12 at 9pm.

- ABC has ordered three extra episodes of Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and additional scripts for The Mayor. I don't think either show is going to make it to a second season but ABC has not given up on them yet.

THE WEEK AHEAD: November 6-12, 2017

Here's a look at Week #7!

ABC
ABC's week has some preemptions thanks to country music. Most perplexing is the choice to preempt hit drama The Good Doctor for what will surely be a low rated Luke Bryan special. Why couldn't they have aired it on Tuesday and preempt Kevin (Probably) Saves the World? As usual, the CMA Awards will preempt their Wednesday night comedy block but the CMA Awards are usually a decent draw. Thursday marks the 300th episode of Grey's Anatomy and that will surely get it back into the 2s in the demo. Friday marks the season (and most likely series) finale of the low rated and critically trashed Marvel's Inhumans.

MONDAY
8:00 Dancing with the Stars
10:00 Living Every Day: Luke Bryan (Special)

TUESDAY

CBS
CBS has cancelled Me, Myself and I (more below) so their new Monday lineup has already changed. Before Man with a Plan returns next week, there will be a repeat of The Big Bang Theory this week. The rest of the week brings the usual lineup including the second week of their Thursday lineup and newbies Young Sheldon and S.W.A.T. It will be interesting to see how this group does in week two.

NBC

CBS has passed the Thursday Night Football baton to NBC and will carry the game for the next two months. The rest of the week has the normal lineup and it will be interesting to see if This is Us can rebound from a big, but expected, drop on Halloween and against the World Series. If it can get all the way back to where it was the week before, that will be great for NBC.

10:00 The Brave

8:00 The Voice
9:00 This is Us

After two weeks of World Series interruptions, FOX's dream is over and its back to reality with their regular lineup. It will be interesting to see how Empire and Star come back as they were easily the strongest FOX performers before two weeks off.

9:00 DC's Legends of Tomorrow

WEDNESDAY
8:00 Riverdale

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS cancelled Me, Myself & I this week, pulling the low rated comedy off the schedule after it dropped to a 0.7 on the new CBS Monday lineup. CBS decided it had enough of its post-Big Bang Monday lineup after just one week. In addition to Me, Myself & I getting cancelled, 9JKL has gotten a timeslot downgrade to 9:30pm while Man with a Plan will come off the bench and start its second season November 13. This was the best thing that could have happened for Plan, which was relegated to backup duty when the fall schedule was announced.

- FOX has renewed The Orville for a second season. It will not get additional episodes this season as it needs a lot of lead time and was conceived for a shorter run this season. After a strong post-football debut, it dropped hard on Thursdays as expected, but it has recovered and stabilized higher than many (including me) thought it would and it seems to be developing a cult following.

- ABC has ordered two extra episodes each of Grey's Anatomy, Black-ish, The Middle, and American Housewife bringing each show's total to 24. This is not a big surprise and a few other comedies could get extra episodes ordered too.

- FOX is planning to reboot 24 once again, this time with a female lead. Its last reboot, last season's 24: Legacy was a disappointment but FOX is hoping this will give it a fresh new look, which seems possible.

PILOT REVIEW: S.W.A.T.

S.W.A.T.

Starring: Shemar Moore, Stephanie Sigman, Alex Russell, Lina Esco, Kenny Johnson, Peter Onorati, and Jay Harrington

Based on the series "S.W.A.T." Created & Developed by Robert Hamner and Rick Husky
Developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan
Written by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas & Shawn Ryan, Directed by Justin Lin

THE PREMISE
S.W.A.T. is another reboot, there's always a few in the new crop of shows every year. This is based on the moderately successful 1970s series and 2003 film of the same name. While it is basically still a cop show centered o a SWAT team, the show has tried to make itself a little more relevant for 2017 by commenting quite on a bit on the relations between the police and the community as led by Sergeant Daniel Harrleson (Shemar Moore).

THE REVIEW
Criminal Minds was a guilty pleasure of mine for many years (though I only watch sporadically now). I never thought it was a great show and I never thought it was well acted, but I still enjoyed it. One of my favorites on that show, though, was Shemar Moore and the show has never been the same since his departure in Spring 2016. I didn't think he was an amazing actor but he was charismatic and at least believable. The same holds true for S.W.A.T. but there's just not enough here to even make it a guilty pleasure.

For starters, the show tries way too hard to be more important than a procedural cop show. It really is transparently trying hard to be a show about race within the police community. But there's something just way to "CBS procedural" about it for that to actually work. Many times I have commented that a show doesn't always have to be about something important or different. If it's done well, it can be a standard procedural and do a really good job at it. Sometimes shows like that can even surprisingly wade into hot button issues effectively (Blue Bloods does this from time to time to solid results). But this kind of show is a little bit more annoying because it's failing at trying to be important.

There are some good things besides Moore. The action scenes were solid and there were some nice visuals in general throughout the episode. But the the cast was saddled with dumb dialogue and typical procedural elements (Moore's relationship with a colleague was especially grating). Like so many shows this season, there wasn't anything horrible or terrible about it. It was just a very "meh" show from start to finish. And it also begs the question, was the TV show or movie really popular enough to warrant a reboot?

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
Probably not. It's not offensively bad but I don't have time for average shows like this unless they're guilty pleasures and this won't be.

QUICK HITS: CW Midseason Schedule Suggestion

Here is my midseason CW schedule! The CW has four shows waiting in the wings and only programs 10 hours so there's less options than the other networks.

MONDAYS
8:00 Supergirl
9:00 (Jan) Dynasty/(Mar) iZombie
For the second year in a row, CW has struck out with their fall freshman dramas. But I think one should get at least a small extension and I would let Dynasty try its luck on Mondays for a little while, though I doubt it will help. In March, I would replace it with iZombie.

TUESDAYS
8:00 The Flash
9:00 (Jan) DC's Legends of Tomorrow/(Feb) Black Lightning
I think we all expect Black Lightning to take over for DC's Legends of Tomorrow and that is the right move. I think the idea of the CW starting to consolidate its superhero shows to a couple nights and this helps to that end.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 Riverdale
9:00 Life Sentence
While their fall freshmen have been flops for two years, the CW stumbled into a big success with Riverdale, which picked up a lot of viewers over the summer and has been one of the few shows on any network to post nice year to year growth. So of course it should stay at 8pm. I would put promising freshman Life Sentence after it even if it's not a tonal fit. It is possibly the best slot CW has for a show like this.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Supernatural
9:00 Arrow
I would leave Thursdays alone. This pair of veterans has worked decently in the fall and the CW needs to focus on other nights.

FRIDAYS
(Jan)
8:00 Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
9:00 Jane the Virgin

(Feb)
8:00 The Originals
9:00 The 100
I would let Friday be the dumping ground, first for their low rated dramedies and then for their low priority veterans starting around February.
