It was down a tenth in viewers but up a tenth in the demo for a season high. Over on ABC, The Bachelorette finale was up nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. It didn't have as big a spike as usual and was down a lot from last year's finale. As usual, the "After the Final Rose" special did well - even better than the finale. On CBS, Under the Dome was down a tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on FOX, Masterchef was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Hotel Hell was up a tenths in viewers and the demo from last week's season premiere.

On Tuesday night, NBC had the series premiere of reality show Food Fighters and it debuted to a modest 1.0 demo. While that number is not good, it could have been worse for an 8pm show debuting in the middle of summer. Live shows of America's Got Talent got started at 9pm and it was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from its last new episode. On ABC, Extreme Weight Loss was dead even with last week while Celebrity Wife Swap was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo.

9:00 Hotel Hell
Viewers: 4.0 million, 18-49 demo: 1.5
Monday night had a complete Gordon Ramsey night on FOX. First up, Masterchef was up four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for a season high. Then the season premiere of Hotel Hell delivered OK numbers but retention wasn't great. Over on CBS, Under the Dome fell down nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo for a new series low. Things might get pretty bad for Dome as the summer wears on but right now it's still getting high numbers for a scripted show. On ABC, a "Men Tell All" special of The Bachelorette was actually up from last week's regular episode while Mistresses was dead even with last week. Finally on NBC, American Ninja Warrior was up four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo.

On Monday night, FOX had the season finale of 24: Live Another Day but first, Masterchef was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Then 24 was up half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo for its best performance since June 2. All in all, it managed to have an OK summer run but I don't know if it's enough to make it worth resurrecting it a second time. Week three of Under the Dome saw a surprising rally as it was down a tenth in viewers but up two tenths in the demo. It's lead-in was up six tenths in the demo so that might have helped but still, this was a good performance for a show that seems to be on the downswing. On ABC, The Bachelorette was down a tenth in viewers and the demo while Mistresses was down a tenth in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. Finally on NBC, American Ninja Warrior was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

RENEWAL ALERT: America's Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, Last Comic Standing
NBC renewed a trio of summer mainstays today, presumably all for next summer. America's Got Talent is summer's top show on any of the broadcast networks so it's no surprise that it will continue. American Ninja Warrior has been a solid performer on Monday nights this summer for NBC. Last Comic Standing returned for the first time since 2010 this summer and started out strong though recent numbers have been lower. Unless things could downhill badly in-season, none of these will likely premiere until May 2015.

On Thursday night, NBC premiered two new sitcoms. Not surprisingly, the results were very low. Welcome to Sweden had the better debut of the two as it held on to all its Hollywood Game Night demo lead-in. In the summer, things could be worse. And they were for Working the Engels which debuted to a pretty terrible 0.7 demo. Last Comic Standing closed out the night up two tenths in viewes and down a tenth in the demo. Away from the 4th of July weekend, CBS saw a big jump for Big Brother as it was up a big 1.4 million viewers and half a demo point. On ABC, Black Box and Rookie Blue were each up a tenth in the demo while NY Med was up two tenths. Finally on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo while Gang Related was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: Working the Engels
WORKING THE ENGELS
Starring: Andrea Martin, Kacey Rohl, Azura Skye, Benjamin Arthur
Created by Katie Ford and Jane Cooperford
Written by Katie Ford & Jane Cooperford, Directed by Mel Damski
Working the Engels is a new Canadian family sitcom airing on NBC this summer. Ceil Engel (Andrea Martin) is a widow who finds out that her family's financial situation is in bad shape because of her husband's bad business dealings at his law firm. She enlists the help of her children to keep the law firm and family afloat: small time crook Jimmy (Benjamin Arthur), reformed party girl Sandy (Azura Skye), and overachiever Jenna (Kacey Engel).
THE GOOD: I was curious about this show because of Andrea Martin, who I saw on Broadway in Pippin last summer and she is certainly the best part about this show. She brings her usual wit and charm to the part and elevates pretty lame material.
THE BAD: I just didn't like this show at all. It all felt stale and tired. A huge pet peeve I have with so many sitcoms today is how they need to be blatantly obvious with the expositions at the beginning of their pilots. Each character was introduced with a freeze, noise, and caption explaining the character. Good writing doesn't need that. I can't think of any show before 2000 that introduced its characters that way and even strong current sitcoms like Modern Family can be much more subtle and interesting in introducing their characters without having to spell it out for the audience like we're a bunch of idiots. Aside from Martin, none of the characters are memorable or enjoyable.
BOTTOM LINE: Unlike Welcome to Sweden, there wasn't anything in this pilot that made me mildly curious to see the second episode. The characters are broadly drawn and I don't this show going in any interesting directions. Andrea Martin shouldn't have left Pippin for this.

PILOT REVIEW: Welcome to Sweden
WELCOME TO SWEDEN
Starring: Greg Poehler, Josephine Bornebusch, Lena Olin, Claes Mansson
Created by Greg Poehler
Written by Greg Poehler, Josephine Bornebusch, & Niclas Carlsson, Directed by Carl Astrand
Welcome to Sweden is a new Swedish comedy created by and starring Greg Poehler (brother of Amy). Poehler plays Bruce Evans, an accountant for celebrities (including Amy) who quits his job so he can move to Sweden with his Swedish girlfriend Emma Wiik (Josephine Bornebusch). Because their place isn't ready, it turns into a Swedish Meet the Parents as Bruce has to deal with Emma's judgmental parents, Viveka and Birger (Lena Olin and Claes Mansson).
THE GOOD: Greg Poehler has some of the same mannerisms that his sister does so well and that helps this show. Specifically, he's a funny reactor to the oddities going on around him. The chemistry between Poehler and Josephine Bornebusch seems genuine. While the show hits two cliches: conflicts with in-laws and the fish out of water concept, the combination of the two cliches actually feels a little fresh. And Amy Poehler's cameo was hilarious.
THE BAD: The problem is that Amy Poehler's cameo was actually the funniest part of the show and that's not a good thing since she's not a series regular. While the show was going for the subtle awkwardness that is a hallmark of shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, it sometimes came across as too awkward. There were long pauses that seemed to be going for comedic effect but actually just felt uncomfortable.
BOTTOM LINE: This isn't a horrible show by any means but it's also not particularly memorable. While I liked Amy Poehler's cameo, her presence in the show just reminded me that she is funnier than her brother and her show is funnier than this one. It invited unnecessary comparisons. But I might give it another shot if only to learn more about Sweden.

Wednesday night had the series premiere of Extant on CBS. First up though, Big Brother was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Then Extant premiered to great total viewer numbers but a very disappointing demo with a 1.6 that was lower than Under the Dome's series low. After weeks of promotion, CBS had to be hoping for better. On NBC, Taxi Brooklyn was down six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while So You Think You Can Dance was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Finally on ABC, Motive was up four tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: Extant
EXTANT
Starring: Halle Berry, Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael O'Neill, Grace Gummer, and Camryn Manheim
Created by Mickey Fisher
Written by Mickey Fisher, Directed by Allen Coulter
Extant is a new sci-fi/futuristic drama that brings Halle Berry back to a regular TV series for the first time since 1989's short-lived comedy Living Dolls. In this show, Berry plays Molly Woods, who has just returned from a 13 month solo mission in space. Most of it went smoothly but there were 13 hours where the computer and lights went down and Molly saw a man there with her (but there's no footage of him on the cameras). Meanwhile, Molly's friend and doctor Sam Barton (Camryn Manheim) tells her she's pregnant, which seems impossible since she was on a solo mission. Rounding out the main cast is Molly's husband, John (Goran Visnjic), who is looking to get funding to create caring robots, like his son with Molly, Ethan (Pierce Gagnon). Whew! And that's just brushing the surface of the plot and characters.
THE GOOD: There were a lot of interesting things in the pilot. The production value is slick especially compared to some of the cheap summer options we've been seeing. Berry is strong as expected and Goran Visnjic is good too in an interesting side plot (that I'm sure will converge with the main plot). Actually, I found the "caring robot" pitch from Visnjic's character to be one of the most interesting parts of the pilot. The mysteries laid out in the pilot were interesting and enticing.
THE BAD: I feel like the pilot threw a lot of balls up in the air and I'm not convinced they'll be able to catch them all. The pilot went a lot of different directions between the flashbacks, the pregnancy, the caring robots, the surveillance of Berry's character, the home life, etc. While I'm sure they are all connected, it almost seemed a little too ambitious. If they can pull it off, I'll be quite impressed. The futuristic things, while not out of the realm of possibility, seemed a little Jetsons-like at times.
BOTTOM LINE: Extant is only the second new show this summer (after The Night Shift) where I actually want to come back and watch more, and I'm not a sci-fi fan. The big story here was Halle Berry being back on TV and she doesn't disappoint, but the plot is the most intriguing element here, assuming they can keep it all together.

Monday night had week two of the new season of Under the Dome for CBS. It suffered a heavy drop of 1.7 million viewers and four tenths in the demo for a new series low. I don't think it's too surprising that this show is not going to have another spectacular summer. It seems to be the summer version of The Following where frustrated fans from season one aren't giving it a second chance. Elsewhere, American Ninja Warrior was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo from its last new episode. On ABC, The Bachelorette was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo for its best performance since June 2. Mistresses was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. Finally on FOX, Masterchef was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo and 24: Live Another Day was up three tenths in viewers and even in the demo.

RENEWAL ALERT: The Night Shift
NBC has renewed its new summer medical drama The Night Shift for a second season. With a summer premiere, the show seemed like a burnoff from NBC's pickups at their 2013 upfronts since it never found a slot during the season. But then it aired after America's Got Talent this summer and premiered to decent numbers with less pressure than the regular season. Though it has dipped a bit, it is still getting respectable summer numbers. Season two will be 14 episodes (season one was just eight) though it remains to be seen if NBC plans to air season two at midseason or next summer.

Monday night had the highly anticipated return of Under the Dome. While it was the best performance for a scripted show yet this summer, it could be considered a disappointment as its 2.1 demo tied a series low and was way behind the 3.3 demo it premiered to last summer or the high 2s it hit most of the time. I think a big drop next week into the mid to upper 1s is very likely. On ABC, The Bachelorette was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Mistresses was up half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo despite more competition from CBS. On FOX, Masterchef was up three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo for a season high. 24: Live Another Day was dead even with last week.

On Sunday night, CBS premiered its new summer Sunday lineup and the results were not great. At 8pm, Big Brother did alright but it was down from its Wednesday and Thursday episodes. Then at 9pm was the series premiere of Reckless and it did absolutely nothing with a pathetic 0.6 demo. Unforgettable's season premiere was a bit of an improvement but it also skewed ancient. If CBS wants to keep Reckless on the air, they should flip timeslots with Unforgettable. On ABC, Wipeout was up seven tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week's two hour premiere. Week two of Rising Star was down three tenths in viewers and the demo so we can officially label this a flop for ABC. It's far from the next big singing competition.
