SEASON IN REVIEW: 2011 Emmy Awards

All that most people have been talking about is the upcoming season but Sunday marks the final night of the 2010-2011 season. It is fitting therefore that the Emmy Awards are on this night, showcasing the best of the season that has gone by. Here are the nominees and my picks on who will and should win.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Dexter (Showtime)
Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
The Good Wife (CBS)
Mad Men (AMC)
Will Win: Boardwalk Empire - Award shows love splashy new dramas and this one certainly fits the bill.
Should Win: Friday Night Lights - Maybe we should adopt the Dillon Panthers motto - "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
30 Rock (NBC)
The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Glee (FOX)
Modern Family (ABC)
The Office (NBC)
Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Will Win: Modern Family - None of the other shows gained enough traction to overtake last year's champ.
Should Win: Parks and Recreation - Family is great but Parks was just a bit more consistent this season.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Michael C. Hall, Dexter (Showtime)
Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
Hugh Laurie, House (FOX)
Timothy Olyphant, Justified (FX)
Will Win: Jon Hamm - With Bryan Cranston not in contention, Hamm will finally get the win.
Should Win: Kyle Chandler - Glad to see him get nominated two years in a row. It would be a fitting capstone to a great performance.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law (NBC)
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Mirielle Enos, The Killing (AMC)
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU (NBC)
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife (CBS)
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men (AMC)
Will Win: Julianna Marguiles - She probably should have won last year but this year she's a shoo-in, right?
Should Win: Connie Britton - Can you tell I'm rooting for Friday Night Lights?

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC)
Louis C.K., Louie (FX)
Steve Carell, The Office (NBC)
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes (Showtime)
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Will Win: Steve Carell - Emmy will finally give him his long overdue Emmy for his swan song.
Should Win: Carell - And they better. His performance is one of the best in TV sitcom history.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
Tina Fey, 30 Rock (NBC)
Laura Linney, The Big C (Showtime)
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly (CBS)
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope (FOX)
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Will Win: Amy Poehler - A lot of people seem to think that Laura Linney will win even if they want someone else to win. I think it'll actually be someone else.
Should Win: Poehler - And it will and should be Poehler who has transformed Leslie Knope from a female Michael Scott to a hilarious sitcom character in her own right.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age (TNT)
Josh Charles, The Good Wife (CBS)
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (HBO)
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife (CBS)
Walton Goggins, Justified (FX)
John Slattery, Mad Men (AMC)
Will Win: Peter Dinklage - He seems to be getting the most buzz.
Should Win: No opinion. I don't watch any of these shows.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife (CBS)
Michelle Forbes, The Killing (AMC)
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men (AMC)
Kelly MacDonald, Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Margo Martindale, Justified (FX)
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife (CBS)
Will Win: Christine Baranski - Last year, it went to Panjabi. This year, the other Good Wife actress gets the win.
Should Win: No opinion. I don't watch any of these shows.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
Ty Burrell, Modern Family (ABC)
Chris Colfer, Glee (FOX)
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family (ABC)
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family (ABC)
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family (ABC)
Will Win: Eric Stonestreet - Unless the many Modern Family actors cancel each other out, it will likely be Stonestreet for a second year in a row.
Should Win: Ty Burrell - He was the funniest all season on Modern Family. Season 1 was all about Cameron and Mitchell but Season 2 was all about Phil and Claire.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
Julie Bowen, Modern Family (ABC)
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock (NBC)
Jane Lynch, Glee (FOX)
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family (ABC)
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland (TV Land)
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Will Win: Jane Lynch - The Emmy host will likely repeat as champ in this category though White could be a sentimental pick.
Should Win: Julie Bowen - Easily the funniest of these ladies. As I said before, Modern Family was all about Phil and Claire this year. Both should win.

EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of  Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below). While  Rhoda  has an occasional good moment and even a couple decent episodes, it is a show that seems so wildly different from season one and not in a good way.  Rhoda  could never figure out what it fully wanted to be and only made it four and a half seasons as a result. Starring Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Julie Kavner as Brenda Morgenstern  (13 episodes) Ray Buktenica as Benny Goodwin  (11 episodes) Kenneth McMillan as Jack Doyle  (9 episodes) Nancy Wa...

SCHEDULES OF THE PAST: 1995-1996 Thursdays

On Tuesdays, I take a look at schedules from yesteryear. Here's a look at Thursdays in the 1995-96 season! ABC 8:00 8:30 9:00 10:00 Sep Charlie Grace The Monroes Various Programs Oct Murder One Nov Various Programs Dec Various Programs Thursday Night Movie Jan Feb World’s Funniest Videos Before They Were Stars! Mar Apr May NBC was the powerhouse on Thursday nights but ABC still gave it the old college try in the Fall of 1995 with a trio of new dramas that they hoped would help them cut into the Peacock's dominance. Headlining their night was Murder One , a high profile new show from Steven Bochco that received much of the network's attention before the season started. The series focused on one murder case for an entire season, whi...

DECADE IN REVIEW: The Best Comedies of the 2010s

During the month of December, I will be looking back at the decade that was the 2010s on TV. I will be sharing my favorite sitcoms, dramas, the best episodes, the best performances and the worst shows of the decade. To be eligible for this list, a show had to air the majority of its episodes in the 2010s. However, for the rankings and determination, all episodes were taken into account, including ones that may have aired before 2010. I will also preface that there are comedies that have aired this decade that I haven't watched yet so this is the best of what I have watched. To be fair, that preface is more true for dramas. There's not a ton of unwatched comedies sitting in my Netflix or Amazon watchlist. So here are my Top 10 comedies of the 2010s! Close Calls:  Master of None (Netflix) - An inconsistent but occasionally fascinating commentary on many life issues done so with innovative storytelling. The Good Place (NBC) - A show that aims high with a fascinating premis...
