PILOT REVIEW: The Enemy Within

THE ENEMY WITHIN

Starring: Jennifer Carpenter, Morris Chestnut, Raza Jaffrey, Kelli Garner, Cassandra Freeman, Noah Mills

Created by Ken Woodruff
Written by Ken Woodruff, Directed by Mark Pellington

IN SHORT: In Case You Want Another The Blacklist or Blindspot.

THE PREMISE:
The Enemy Within sort of functions as a reverse of The Blacklist, from a gender standpoint. Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) was a brilliant CIA Deputy Director of Operations until she was arrested for Espionage by FBI agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut). Three years later, FBI and CIA agents are under attack and the FBI must bring Shepherd out from her jail cell to assist them in figuring out what is going on. Rounding out the main cast includes fellow FBI agent Daniel Zain (Raza Jaffrey) and tech girl Kate Ryan (Kelli Garner).

THE REVIEW:
The Enemy Within started with a bang. The initial scene showing Shepherd's arrest followed the simultaneous attacks on FBI and CIA agents was pretty thrilling and reminiscent of those other Monday 10pm dramas and their captivating starts. This one may not have been as engaging as The Blacklist's welcome to James Spader or the very memorable "tattooed naked girl in Times Square" start to Blindspot but it was pretty intense nonetheless. After that though, it settled into a much more predictable drama that took itself far too seriously (I lost count of the number of slow motion moments the pilot employed) and seems very prone to going off the rails very soon.

One of the biggest problems is they seem to have already taken a lot of the edge off of the premise of the show by revealing the reasons behind Erica's seeming espionage. Now we already know that she isn't really a spy but instead was (surprise, surprise) protecting her kid. For a show that billed itself in the promos and the first half of the episode that she was a potential terrorist, this was a pretty quick reveal and not a satisfying one at that.

The cast ranges from serviceable to unmemorable. On the serviceable side is Morris Chestnut, who plays a believable FBI agent but there's nothing he does here that hasn't been done by tons of other actors in these types of roles over the years. On the unmemorable side is Jennifer Carpenter, who does not have any type of charisma and doesn't quite seem like a steely criminal or a caring mother. A more dynamic performance in this role could elevate the entire show (case in point: Spader in The Blacklist). The pilot ended with probably the most predictable twist to end a pilot that I've seen in awhile.

BOTTOM LINE:
I don't really know why NBC keeps trying these kind of shows. Yes, there was the gold standard with The Blacklist but since then we have seen rapid declines (Blindspot) or DOA results (State of Affairs). I think this one will be closer to DOA with much less of a hook than some other 10pm dramas that have aired in recent years.

PILOT REVIEW: Whiskey Cavalier

WHISKEY CAVALIER

Starring: Scott Foley, Lauren Cohan, Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams, Vir Das, with James McDaniel, and Josh Hopkins

Created by David Hemingson
Written by David Hemingson, Directed by Peter Atencio

IN SHORT: A Get Smart for 2019

THE PREMISE:
Whiskey Cavalier is a globe-hopping spy dramedy centered on FBI agent Will Chase a.k.a. Whiskey Cavalier (Scott Foley) who is recently coming off a bad breakup and goes toe to toe with CIA operative Frankie Trowbridge (Lauren Cohan). They work with NSA analyst Edgar Standish (Tyler James Williams) despite the three of them trying to achieve different objectives in the pilot. Rounding out the main cast is fellow FBI agent Ray Prince (Josh Hopkins), a hot shot FBI profiler who is stateside, Susan Sampson (Ana Ortiz), CIA agent Jai Datta (Vir Das), and the FBI Director (James McDaniel).

THE REVIEW:
Whiskey Cavalier is the best kind of spy show in my opinion: one that doesn't take itself very seriously and spends episodes hopping around the globe. Just as I'm predetermined to hate sci-fi shows, I am also pre-determined to like spy shows so going in, this one didn't have to do all that much to win me over. Any show that's going to spend parts of its pilot in France, Russia, Germany, and New York City is exciting to me. But there have been shows like this that just don't work due to the leading performances (Undercovers for example). What makes Whiskey Cavalier winning is the strong performance of its cast, especially the three characters we spend the most time with in the pilot.

Scott Foley, Lauren Cohan, and Tyler James Williams really make this show what it is. While Foley was a divisive character on Scandal, he is very enjoyable in this role where he's less serious and has a silly streak to him. The vacillating between being a tough FBI agent and a heartsick man coming off a breakup was played in a pretty funny way. He also had good chemistry with Lauren Cohan and they seemed to be enjoying playing the one-up game. Tyler James Williams fit nicely into the trio as well with some good one-liners. I would gladly watch these three carry out spy missions and bicker on a weekly basis.

This looked like an expensive pilot with its many different countries visited not to mention some major explosions. I always wonder when pilots pull out all the stops if they will be able to keep up the feature film feel on a regular basis. Whether or not it can do that, I hope it continues to not take itself very seriously and tries not to delve too deep into a mythology or a continuing storyline. A little of that is fun but I just want to see this team carrying out missions across the globe on a weekly basis. That's not too much to ask, is it?

BOTTOM LINE:
Despite its Oscars promotion and sneak peek following the awards show, it has a tough task airing in a timeslot that has been rough for ABC (most recently evidenced by A Million Little Things seeing much more success on Thursday). But I'll be hoping it can find an audience, I would enjoy a nice escapist show like this.

THE WEEK AHEAD: February 25-March 3, 2019

Here's a look at Week #23!

ABC
Following the Oscars, ABC has an all new week with the series premiere of Whiskey Cavalier on Wednesday. It will be the same episode that was previewed after the Oscars last night, but will air in its regular timeslot. This week also has the season premiere of American Idol on Sunday night and I have a feeling it will be underwhelming. There are also two season finales for Thursday dramas A Million Little Things and How to Get Away with Murder. Million has already been renewed for next season and while its ratings have been very low this year, I think Murder will get renewed as well.

NBC
NBC has a busy week with the return of The Voice with new coach John Legend on Monday and Tuesday night. Monday will lead into the series premiere of The Enemy Within, which has had a ton of promotion in recent weeks though I don't think it will come close to Manifest's 2.2 demo premiere from the fall. Tuesday has the season premiere of the former summer show World of Dance before it heads to anchor Sunday nights, where it leads into a new season of Good Girls. This week also has the season finale of The Titan Games.

Despite premieres and finales all over the place, the biggest event of the week is likely to be The Masked Singer on Wednesday night, which I think could easily see a 3.0 demo or above, something not often season in 2018-19. TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS has renewed Young Sheldon for two more seasons. The sophomore comedy is likely taking over the 8pm Thursday slot from the show it spun off from, The Big Bang Theory, next season and this is a show of good faith. But we've yet to really see how it will do without the mothership in front of it. That won't be known until the fall.

THE WEEK AHEAD: February 18-24, 2019

Here's a look at Week #22!

ABC
ABC has a fully new week leading up to the Oscars on Sunday. After a ton of issues this year with hosts or lack thereof, music, and categories presented on air, it will be interesting to see if that means more or less curiosity in the Oscars. My guess is less. It's not listed here, but ABC will preview the new drama Whiskey Cavalier after the Oscars before its regular timeslot premiere next Wednesday.

PILOT REVIEW: Proven Innocent

PROVEN INNOCENT

Starring: Rachelle Lefevre, Russell Hornsby, Vincent Kartheiser, Nikki M. James, Riley Smith, Clare O'Connor, and Kelsey Grammer

Created by David Elliot
Written by David Elliot, Directed by Patricia Riggen

IN SHORT: Conviction with more conviction

THE PREMISE:
Madeline Scott (Rachelle Lefevre) was wrongfully accused of murdering her best friend alongside her brother, Levi (Riley Smith). After spending ten years in prison, she emerged with a new degree and mission and now runs a wrongful conviction law firm alongside associates Ezekiel (Russell Hornsby), Bodie (Vincent Kartheiser), and Violet (Nikki M. James). Through their clients, they are trying to take down Gore Bellows (Kelsey Grammar), who put Madeline behind bars and is now running for governor. There are also many flashbacks to young Madeline (Clare O'Connor).

THE REVIEW:
I was pleasantly surprised by Proven Innocent and interested to see that it appears to be serial in nature than a "case of the week" show - or at least that seemed to be the case in the pilot. That doesn't mean this is a world class drama by any means. It's still predictable, it still takes tremendous leaps in logic like all crime dramas do. I also had low expectations but it did exceed those expectations for what it's worth. It has a potentially compelling through line and back story that could be quite interesting or could turn out to be a lot of the same.

A big get for this show was Kelsey Grammer, who brings some gravitas to the show and is a larger than life personality for a role that's very well suited for him. Not that the rest of the cast isn't solid, but Grammer's presence almost seemed to legitimize the show even though Grammer has been in a few stinkers himself. I'm not totally sold on Rachelle Lefevre in the main role, but I thought she was alright. The rest of the supporting cast is solid though I always wonder how someone like Vincent Kartheiser must feel after being in one of the greatest TV dramas of all time (Mad Men) and now on a sleepy Friday night network drama that isn't terrible but of course is no Mad Men.

I was interested in the concept of 2016's Conviction, but it ended up being a terrible show. This show has a similar premise and at least at first glance, was a better show. The tighter and more interesting back story helped here as well as a "case of the week" that had some compelling moments. I still rolled my eyes a few times at how conveniently and quickly they were able to crack the case, but I guess you have to go in expecting that to an extent. I think the idea of wrongful convictions is a very rich place to explore for a weekly TV drama. Proven Innocent might be up to the task and it might not be. I could see it going either way.

BOTTOM LINE:
In a very sleepy timeslot on a network that is only decreasing their scripted offerings, it seems extremely unlikely that we'll see very many episodes of Proven Innocent so we may never know what actually happened in the back story.

THE WEEK AHEAD: February 11-17, 2018

Here's a look at Week #21!

ABC
ABC has a mostly new week with some Valentine's Day episodes sprinkled in. The Tuesday lineup could be rough and it's unlikely anything will sniff a 1.0 demo. An airing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens replaces the Sunday lineup.

MONDAY
8:00 The Bachelor
10:00 The Good Doctor (Repeat)

TUESDAY
8:00 American Housewife
8:30 The Kids Are Alright (Valentine's Day episode)
9:00 Black-ish

10:00 The Rookie (Valentine's Day episode)

WEDNESDAY
8:00 The Goldbergs (Valentine's Day episode)
8:30 Schooled
9:00 Modern Family (Repeat)
9:30 Single Parents (Valentine's Day episode)

CBS
CBS has the season finale of Big Brother: Celebrity Edition on Wednesday night. It has been a solid performer this winter. It follows week two of The World's Best, which had a very disappointing start in its first airing after its Super Bowl preview.

MONDAY

8:30 Man With a Plan
9:00 Big Brother: Celebrity Edition
10:00 Bull

SUNDAY

9:00 Elvis All-Star Tribute (Special)

FOX
FOX has the first series premiere in about a month on Friday night with Proven Innocent. It will have an hour of Last Man Standing as a lead-in but this is a sleepy timeslot for a show with no buzz. I think anything higher than a 0.7 or 0.8 demo would be very surprising.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- NBC has renewed New Amsterdam for a second season. The medical drama has been a solid performer behind This is Us. It did especially well early on, but is still holding on decently for a 10pm drama. It will take several weeks off in March for the first few weeks of The Village.

- CBS has renewed Mom for two more seasons. The hit CBS comedy had some negotiations to get through with series stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney and that resulted in a two season renewal, something that seems increasingly important with The Big Bang Theory ending.

- ABC renewed Modern Family for an 11th and final season. The multi-year Emmy winner that helped turn around ABC's comedy fortunes will get a proper sendoff with an announced final season. Also joining the renewal list for ABC is A Million Little Things for season two and The Good Doctor for season three. There was also clarification that Dancing with the Stars will be back in the fall after not airing this spring.

- NBC has moved the series premiere of The Village back a week to March 19 at 10pm. It will follow This is Us for three weeks and then take over the This is Us timeslot on April 2.

- FOX has renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons, which will take it through an amazing 32 seasons and 713 episodes. The iconic animated series has been speculated about as FOX transitions to New FOX but it is the legacy of all legacy shows and seems likely to stay as long as FOX is still airing in some form of a traditional broadcast network.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS has renewed God Friended Me for a second season. This came on the heels of renewals for fellow freshmen FBI, The Neighborhood, and Magnum P.I. The Sunday night drama has done decently, especially in total viewers. It rounds out a mostly successful freshman class for CBS with only Happy Together unlikely to return among the fall newbies.

- FOX has renewed The Masked Singer for a second season. This was not a surprise and more of a formality as the winter reality show has been a surprise hit.

- The CW renewed a flurry of its shows, leaving only a few with fates undecided. The renewals include top show The Flash for a sixth season and fellow superhero shows Arrow (season 8), DC's Legends of Tomorrow (season 5), Supergirl (season 5), and Black Lightning (season 3). Also on the list is Supernatural, which will be returning for an incredible 15th season. Freshman dramas Charmed and Legacies also made the cut as well as a third season for Riverdale and perpetually low-rated Dynasty. None of these were that much of a surprise, even Dynasty, which is the biggest proof that the CW doesn't care much about linear ratings. With Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ending, the CW shows currently airing that don't know their fate are All American and Roswell, New Mexico. It's too early to tell but promising for Roswell and probably not a great sign for All American. Still to premiere are The 100, newbie In the Dark, and the final seasons of Jane the Virgin and iZombie.
