It was a quiet Monday as the dog days of summer come to a close. ABC had a new Bachelor Pad featuring the reveal of the new Dancing with the Stars cast during a commercial break. It was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Elsewhere on FOX, a new episode of Hell's Kitchen was down two tenths in viewers but up two tenths in the demo from last week's 9pm episode. And finally a new, special edition of Dateline NBC on NBC won the 10pm hour, but that's not saying much.

The season finale of Expedition: Impossible was up a tenth in viewers and even in the demo. This show had a lot of promotion but didn't do very well and probably won't see a second summer. At 10pm, Rookie Blue was up three tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Elsewhere, on CBS, Big Brother was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo to a strong 3.1.

On a fairly busy Wednesday night, FOX had the premiere of the final new summer show Buried Treasure which did pretty much nothing, not too surprising. Elsewhere, ABC had a new airing of Happy Endings left over from last season. It was up from repeat numbers but significantly down from a repeat Modern Family lead-in. I don't think this show can do any better than Cougar Town did in the plum 9:30 slot this fall. CBS's Big Brother was down a tenth in viewers and two tenths in the demo. On NBC, Minute to Win It was up 1.1 million viewers and two tenths in the demo while America's Got Talent was up 1.4 million viewers and four tenths in the demo. And finally, the battle between Law & Order: SVU and CSI started (albeit in reruns). CSI won the total viewer count but SVU took the demo, which could be a sign of things to come.

PILOT REVIEW: Buried Treasure
BURIED TREASURE
Starring Leigh and Leslie Keno
The final new summer show to premiere in a long, boring summer for network TV is FOX's Buried Treasure. I'll be honest that I was only half watching this show as I am so tired of reviewing unscripted summer fare (in fact, I may not even review summer shows next summer). Don't worry, I will have much better and detailed fall reviews! Anyway, on to the review. This show is a network attempt to capitalize on the antique pawn shop shows that are popular on cable, particularly the History Channel.
It is harmless enough and somewhat interesting. The Keno brothers go around to houses where people feel they might have something of value. Of course they have a story to tell ala any inspirational reality show and then by the end, they find out if any of their items are worth something. The reveal of course cues the tears or the disappointment that comes with finding out if they will strike it rich. It is what is is... a harmless summer reality show. Let's get on with it and bring on the fall shows! September 14 can't come soon enough.

The 8pm episode was down nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo but the 9pm episode grew from the 8pm edition (though it was still down from last week's numbers). An American Ninja Warrior special on NBC did better than usual in the demo for the peacock network.

NBC was all new on Wednesday night including the season finale of Love in the Wild which was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. While the show was fairly consistent after initial drops, it did not do very well behind NBC's strongest summer performer. Because of that, it probably won't see a second summer but it's not out of the question. Earlier in the night, Minute to Win It was up a tenth in viewers and the demo while America's Got Talent was up dead even in both categories. Elsewhere, CBS's Big Brother continued to fly high as it was up four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo to a very strong 3.1. This has been a very strong summer for the veteran CBS show.

FOX had a strong Tuesday night with the season finale of MasterChef which was up six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's Tuesday airing and also up nicely from last summer's season finale. After a slow start, this show really became a solid summer performer for FOX and will surely be back in the future. Elsewhere, ABC did not get much mileage with new shows from 9-11pm. In its third week, Take the Money & Run was down a heavy 1.2 million viewers and four tenths in the demo as it continues to fall. Combat Hospital on the other hand was up half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo but still low. Finally, NBC's It's Worth What? was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while America's Got Talent was down a heavy 1.1 million viewers and two tenths in the demo.

Kitchen was up half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week while MasterChef was up six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Elsewhere, ABC had a new Bachelor Pad which was down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week but it was still very solid.

On Sunday night, FOX had the series premiere of sketch comedy show In the Flow with Affion Crockett. Not surprisingly, it got off to a slow start and then dropped from there for its second episode at 9:30pm. Elsewhere, ABC had two music specials - a 7pm special got very few eyeballs but the CMA Music Festival at 8pm did alright by summer standards in the total viewers category. CBS had a PGA overrun that delayed its lineup by an hour and the preliminary results are slightly skewed due to that so it's worth waiting until the finals are out to compare. Finally, NBC's The Marriage Ref had a double dose of episodes that was basically on par with last week and very low.

PILOT REVIEW: In the Flow with Affion Crockett
IN THE FLOW WITH AFFION CROCKETT
Starring: Affion Crockett
FOX's new sketch comedy from Jamie Foxx In the Flow with Affion Crockett is a complete mess. When shows get benched from a June launch date to an August launch date, it's not usually a good sign. With this show, it's easy to see why it couldn't even make the first summer cut. Basically every skit felt like a bad week on Saturday Night Live. From the beginning, it's clear that Affion Crockett was trying too hard and it went downhill from there.
The Jay-Z impression was weak and bad, the Tiger Woods skit was juvenile and bad, the "Wake Up Call" sketch was bordering on the offensive and bad, and the Gospel singer skit was mind numbingly unfunny and bad. To make matters worse, the "audience" was hooting and hollering at very unfunny punchlines while Affion Crockett continued to annoy in the studio scenes in-between the sketches. Summer TV isn't supposed to be very good but this is one of the worst.

Not that anything better was expected. It will probably be allowed to finish out its run unless it really tanks next week. Elsewhere, NBC's burnoffs of Friends with Benefits were down from last week while Dateline NBC was up 1.2 million viewers yet even in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: Karaoke Battle USA
KARAOKE BATTLE USA
Hosted by Joey Fatone
Judges: Joe Levy, Carnie Wilson, Brian Scott
Karaoke Battle USA is a new singing competition show on ABC banished to Fridays in the summer and it's not hard to see why. Everything about this show was over the top. With the dramatic introduction, pauses, etc - it's easy to forget that this for a KARAOKE competition. They want to be like American Idol (the theme and introduction graphics seemed like a carbon copy) but it's hard to take it seriously. Host Joey Fatone is about what you would expect him to be while the judges were over the top in theatrics even though Carnie Wilson had her moments. Previous karaoke winner Brian Scott couldn't stop mentioning his championship and experience while Joe Levy acted as if this was the most important competition in the world.
There was a part of me that almost felt sad for the contestants. Here we are in a poor man's version of American Idol and yet they are acting like this is the biggest thing in the world for them. Once again, has everyone forgotten that this is a karaoke competition? I knew we were in for a bad show when the first contestant dedicated his over the top Cher performance to "America." NBC found a show that actually challenges American Idol in quality with The Voice earlier this year. Karaoke Battle USA is the umpteenth weak imitation of FOX's flagship show. Good thing it's banished to Friday nights in the summer.

PILOT REVIEW: Friends With Benefits
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
Starring: Ryan Hansen, Dannell Ackles, Zach Cregger, Andre Holland, Jessica Lucas
Created by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber
Written by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, Directed by David Dobkin
Friends With Benefits is a sitcom that is being burned off on NBC this summer. Originally intended to be a part of the 2010-2011 lineup, it never quite made it to the air until now (you'd think NBC would have been able to find a place for it considering all the sitcom bombs they aired this season). As the title implies, it focuses on two friends (Ben and Sara) who are best friends that are unlucky in love and in the meantime, they sleep with each other. As is necessary in a romantic comedy of today's day and age, they are rounded out by a quirky class of young urban friends. In the pilot, both Ben and Sara experience another bad date while two other friends hook up.
This show is not anything new. In fact, in a season that saw Happy Endings, Traffic Light, Perfect Couples, etc - it actually seems like I've already seen it. The thing is, it's not the worst of its genre and I'm surprised NBC picked the dreadful Perfect Couples to air in January over this, which was only ok at best but not nearly as bad as Couples. The show started strong (the banter between Ben and Sarah) and ended strong (a very funny tag scene) but in-between, there were lots of problems that this show would need to work out if this show was to actually have a chance of continuing. The flashbacks and flashforwards were overused here (and in the genre in general), it was way too cutesy at times, and it bordered on the side of ridiculous at times (such as the horse scene). It's not anything special, it's just not the worst urban romantic comedy of the season.

ABC had a new show premiere on Tuesday night - Take the Money & Run. Its premiere was basically even with the premiere of 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show six weeks ago which is good enough for a summer airing. It was preceded by a new Wipeout which did alright and followed by Combat Hospital which was down a tenth in viewers but up a tenth in the demo. NBC's game show It's Worth What? was down another half million viewers and two tenths in the demo for its third week while America's Got Talent was up four tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Finally, Hell's Kitchen on FOX was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while MasterChef was even in both categories with last week.

PILOT REVIEW: Take the Money and Run
TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN
ABC's new game show Take the Money and Run has one major thing going for it. There is nothing else like it on television - a blending of a game show and a crime procedural. In this very unique premise, two people are given one hour to stash $100,000 somewhere where they hope it can't be found. Then they are "arrested" by real cops and the detectives/interrogators are given 48 hours to find the money. If they are unsuccessful, the two contestants get to walk away with the cash.
I really did love this premise going in but I don't feel like it lived up to it. It actually got a bit dry. Knowing that the whole thing was a game show made the interrogation scenes much less interesting than in a crime procedural (and the female interrogator seemed very aware she was on television). I wish more time had been spent on the hiding and actual searching for the money. The best part was that it wasn't easy to tell if the money would be found or not. It's a show that with some tweaks could work because of its premise but it needs to come across less boring for starters.

ABC was all new on Monday night with the season finale of The Bachelorette which was up eight tenths in viewers and even in the demo but down a lot from last year's finale. Is the long running franchise of The Bachelor/The Bachelorette finally starting to fade? A post-show special actually did better than the finale. Elsewhere, FOX's Hell's Kitchen was down half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week and MasterChef was slightly behind Kitchen.

There was a few new shows sprinkled in among the repeats on the final night in July. A Bachelorette special ahead of Monday's finale did not do much but was above normal ABC numbers in the Sunday night timeslot for the summer. CBS saw a season high from Big Brother which was up 1.2 million viewers and four tenths in the demo but that did not help week two of Same Name, which was down nine tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from its lackluster debut last week. Over on NBC, The Marriage Ref was down two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo as it continue its poor summer run.
