On Wednesday night, FOX used Empire as a lead-in for the first time ever as Empire's fall finale led into a sneak peek of the new drama that will be temporarily taking its place, Star. Empire was up six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. It rose, but it was still its second lowest result ever. It will not be back until March which isn't great for a show that seems to be losing steam quickly. At 9pm, Star had a sneak peek to a solid 2.2 demo. It certainly got sampled but we'll see how it does on its own starting in January with a surely much lower lead-in. On CBS, the 33rd edition of Survivor was up six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week. This is a show that doesn't spike anymore for finales but it is in an extremely healthy state for a show that's aired two cycles a year since 2000. Holiday specials did decently for NBC and poorly for the CW.

On ABC, the comedies were up from last week's ugly drops. The Goldbergs was up eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo while Speechless was up nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. Modern Family did not air last week so it was even in viewers and down two tenths in the demo from two weeks ago. This is a new series low for Modern as it came dangerously close to going into the 1s for the first time ever. I'm sure it will happen sometime this season though probably in the spring, not the winter. At 9:30pm, Black-ish was up a strong 1.3 million viewers and four tenths in the demo. It does not have to deal with Empire for awhile now and that should help matters. At 10pm, Designated Survivor was up a million viewers and a tenth in the demo. It will now be off the air for quite awhile, which seems like a horrible decision for a serialized freshman show. I don't understand why ABC didn't decide to bring this back in January. Instead they will air Match Game while this sits on the shelf following comedies at a time of year where TV viewing is usually high.

WINNER OF THE NIGHT: Star (FOX)
LOSER OF THE NIGHT: Modern Family (ABC)
