PILOT REVIEW: Reckless

RECKLESS

Starring: Anna Wood, Cam Gigandet, Shawn Hatosy, Georgina Haig, Kim Wayans, Michael Gladis, with Gregory Harrison, and Adam Rodriguez

Created by Dana Stevens
Written by Dana Stevens, Directed by Catherine Hardwicke

Reckless is a new soapy drama that feels like an ABC show. Set in Charleston, South Carolina, it centers on an instant attraction between northern litigator Jamie Sawyer (Anna Wood) and southern attorney Roy Rayder (Cam Gigdandet). They are also adversaries in a police sex scandal involving disgraced officer Lee Anne Marcus (Georgina Haig) and dirty cop Terry McCandless (Shawn Hatosy).

THE GOOD: I don't have much good to say about this one. It's nice to see a soapy drama like this not set in New York or California, but that doesn't mean it's done well. It is a step above ABC's Betrayal however because I actually do believe the chemistry between the two leads.

THE BAD: Even though it was not as bad as Betrayal, Reckelss brought nothing new to this overexposed genre. The show tried to raise the stakes with dramatic reveals and the rich players involved but nothing felt overly important or urgent. The performances were fine but pedestrian. The show that started this revival of these types of shows, Revenge, was bolstered by such a dynamic performance from Madeleine Stowe. There's no equivalent in this show. The characters are blandly drawn and fighting over something that I don't feel invested in as a viewer.

BOTTOM LINE: This isn't the worst of these types of shows (once again, look at Betrayal) but there's nothing here that's going to make me come back for a second week. It's easy to see why CBS chose to stick this bland drama in the summer.

There was lots of new programming on Thursday night. Night two of Big Brother on CBS was on par with the first night, which is a good sign that audiences are embracing the newest season. On ABC, the season premiere of NY Med was a decent performer in total viewers but it skewed old. Earlier in the night, Black Box was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while Rookie Blue was down eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's season premiere. On NBC, both episodes of Undateable were down a tenth from last week while Last Comic Standing fell a troubling eight tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo. The early promise of this season of Last Comic is fading away. Finally on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was down a tenth in viewers and the demo while Gang Related was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

PILOT REVIEW: Taxi Brooklyn

TAXI BROOKLYN

Starring: Chyler Leigh, Jacky Ido, James Colby, Jose Zuniga, Jennifer Esposito, Bill Heck, Ally Walker, Raul Casso

Based on the film "Taxi" written by Luc Besson
Developed for television by Gary Scott Thompson, Stephen Tolkin, & Franck Ollivier
Written by Gary Scott Thompson, Directed by Olivier Megaton

Taxi Brooklyn is a new comedy-drama series based on the 1998 French film "Taxi" (which was remade into the 2004 Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah movie of the same name). In this incarnation, Caitlin "Cat" Sullivan (Chyler Leigh) is a cop who doesn't always play by the rules. She enlists the help of a taxi driver (and French fugitive) Leo Romba (Jacky Ido) to help her solve the death of her father.

THE GOOD: This show got a little better as the pilot went on. There were some funny interactions between Leigh and Ido and the chemistry between them is pretty good. The Brooklyn setting keeps the pace up and I really do enjoy Chyler Leigh in the lead role. While her part is a little bit cliched (rogue cop with revenge on her agenda), she plays it convincingly.

THE BAD: I don't really feel like we got to know any of the other characters that well besides Cat and Leo. The group of other cops and detectives all sort of ran together while Cat's mom (Ally Walker) was not too memorable. The first scene had a frenetic camera and it was a turn-off to me because it was dizzy and unnecessary even though I know it was their way of trying to capture the intensity of the scene. And as I said before, the show was full of cop drama cliches, which is not too surprising.

BOTTOM LINE: While I didn't mind Taxi Brooklyn, I don't think I'll keep watching it. There was nothing in it that really hooked me and made me think it would be a worthwhile show to watch this summer. It was fine but ordinary and it will probably be quickly forgotten after the summer of 2014.

Wednesday night had two premieres. CBS had the season premiere of annual summer franchise Big Brother. It was down just slightly from last year's premiere with a very solid 2.3 demo. It looks like Big Brother will continue to be a solid summer player. Meanwhile, new scripted drama Taxi Brooklyn didn't make much of an impact on NBC though it could have been worse because the total viewer count was decent enough. Elsewhere, FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was down nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo while Motive was down nine tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo on ABC.

On Sunday night, ABC trotted out its new singing competition series but it looks a lot more like it'll be the next Duets than the next The Voice. Rising Star didn't make much of an impact on the ratings especially considering what ABC was probably hoping for. It wasn't a complete disaster but it doesn't look like it's going to make much of a difference. Earlier in the night, the season premiere of Wipeout returned to very low numbers - this is why its relegated to a summer series now.

On Thursday night, ABC had the two hour premiere of perennial summer drama Rookie Blue. First up, Black Box was up three tenths in viewers and down a tenth in the demo at a special time. Then season 5 of Rookie Blue premiered to numbers that were below last year's premiere but consistent with what it was getting for most of the summer. On NBC, two more episodes of Undateable were down in viewers and even in the demo from last week. Undateable has arguably exceeded expectations but I don't see it getting a second season. Last Comic Standing was down a tenth in viewers and up two tenths in the demo. Finally on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was up two tenths in the demo for its best performance since April 3 while Gang Related was even in the demo.

CANCELLATION ALERT: Riot, I Wanna Marry "Harry"

In a move that surprise no one, FOX cancelled unscripted summer show Riot and I Wanna Marry "Harry" after three dismal weeks together. The shows got absolutely no interest and pulled unacceptable numbers, even by summer standards on FOX. The shows will be replaced by reruns of Family Guy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, and The Mindy Project starting this coming Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, NBC's summer lineup had a great second week. America's Got Talent was down just seven tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week's strong start while week two of new drama The Night Shift held up well as it was down eight tenths in viewers and just a tenth in the demo as well. This is even more impressive for Night Shift as it seems viewers are not rejecting this show. On ABC, Extreme Weight Loss was up a tenth in viewers and down a tenth in the demo from last week's season premiere. The season finale of Celebrity Wife Swap was up three tenths in viewers and a surprising three tenths in the demo for a season high. I'm not sure what made this spike so much but it may well have earned another season with that, though it may belong only in summer. FOX had another disastrous week with both Riot and I Wanna Marry "Harry" getting just a 0.4 demo. Yet, it appears like FOX is not going to make any changes here.

The season premiere of Mistresses at 10pm was at the same demo it premiered to a year ago and on par with numbers it got through most of the summer so this was a solid return for ABC's summer soap. On NBC, American Ninja Warrior was up six tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for its best performance since July 23, 2012. Finally on FOX, Masterchef was up a million viewers and three tenths in the demo from its season premiere last week. 24: Live Another Day went up for the first time as it was up half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo.

On Friday night, NBC got some OK mileage out of the premiere of Crossbones. First up though, Dateline NBC was up a million viewers and a tenth in the demo. Then the premiere of Crossbones was above anything Hannibal got in this slot since March 28, though it skewed older. If it can get numbers like Dracula and Hannibal during the summer months, that's a solid performer for NBC. On ABC, Primetime: What Would You Do? was down seven tenths in viewers and even in the demo while 20/20 was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

NBC's solid summer continued on Thursday night. First up at 8pm, Hollywood Game Night was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. The surprise of the week came at 9pm where the series premiere of Undateable did surprisingly adequate. While 3.8 million viewers and a 1.3 demo is nothing to write home about, it did better than most NBC Thursday sitcoms in the regular season and it held steady across both episodes. It could easily have been a show that got below a 1 in the demo for its premiere so it was definitely an overachiever. Last Comic Standing had a solid second week as it was down seven tenths in viewers and just a tenth in the demo from last week's two hour premiere. On ABC, Black Box was dead even with last week. Finally on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Gang Related was actually up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week's premiere.
