On Monday night, we got a glimpse of the fall with the season premiere of NBC's Grimm fresh off tons of Olympic promotion. The start of its three week Monday run before it goes back to Fridays delivered its best demo since the series premiere last October. While the numbers could have been better with so much promotion, it did get some new sampling which might help it on Fridays where it overperformed last season. Elsewhere, two new late summer shows had series premieres. NBC's Stars Earn Stripes didn't do much but didn't completely tank while FOX's Hotel Hell got off to a good start though it couldn't compare another Gordon Ramsey show that followed (Hell's Kitchen).

PILOT REVIEW: Animal Practice

ANIMAL PRACTICE

Starring: Justin Kirk, Joanna Garcia Swisher, Bobby Lee, Kym Whitley, Betsy Sodaro, and Tyler Labine

Created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka
Written by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo

Animal Practice is a new sitcom on NBC with the unique setting of an animal hospital. The show centers on Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk), a brilliant vet who doesn't care much for people. His vet hospital is given to the granddaughter of the former owner, his ex-girlfriend Dorothy Crane (Joanna Garcia Swisher). Rounding out the cast are other employees of the hospital including the timid brown nose Dr. Yamamoto (Bobby Lee), sassy Juanita (Kym Whitley), bizarre Angela (Betsy Sodaro), and Dr. Doug Jackson (Tyler Labine), who is friendly but unlucky in love. Also in the cast is George's monkey Rizzo (Crystal the Monkey) who is basically his right hand man.

THE GOOD: Well, Crystal the Monkey is funny. Monkeys are always a hit because of their personalities (look at Marcel on Friends) and this is no exception as Crystal has better acting chops than most of the cast. Joanna Garcia Swisher is solid in her role but isn't given enough to work with to help her truly shine. She needs the right vehicle (same goes for Tyler Labine, who was better in Mad Love than this but also needs better material). Finally, I really like the setting, it's a very unique place to set a sitcom.

THE BAD: If only things were better written and acted to make the unique setting work, we might have a fun quirky new comedy. Instead we got a mess of a pilot that didn't come together. The main problem for me was Justin Kirk. I didn't like him at all in the lead role and I don't feel like he can carry a sitcom as the central character. His delivery and timing seemed off. While Garcia Swisher, Labine, and Whitley are ok in their roles, Lee and Sodaro are almost unwatchable. Their characters are written poorly and their acting is even worse. When are sitcom writers going to realize that they need to write real characters with real personalities not just quirky caricatures? It never works when they do that and it happens all the time.

BOTTOM LINE: This show got a lot of bad press when the trailer was released in May and it's easy to see why. I'm surprised NBC chose to sample this show with the Olympics lead-in because it seems destined to fail. It's certainly not a mainstream hit and I don't see it becoming a cult favorite like Community. It seems like a candidate for an early cancellation. Too bad they didn't make more out of an interesting concept.

PILOT REVIEW: Go On

GO ON

Starring: Matthew Perry, Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Tyler James Williams, Brett Gehlman, Khary Payton, and John Cho

Created by Scott Silveri
Written by Scott Silveri, Directed by Todd Holland

Matthew Perry is back on NBC but this time in a single camera sitcom as Ryan King, a radio sportscaster who lost his wife in an accident. When his boss Steven (John Cho) tells him he must go to grief counseling if he wants to come back to work, he skeptically joins a support group led by Lauren (Laura Benanti). Rounding out the main cast is the rest of the quirky support group including Anne (Julie White), a lesbian whose partner died; Yolanda (Suzy Nakamura) a younger woman whose parents are divorcing; Owen (Tyler James Williams) who is very reluctant to talk but whose brother is in a coma; Mr. K (Brett Gehlman), an odd and mysterious member of the group who hasn't shared his grief; and Don (Khary Payton) who is moving on after a divorce and financial hardship.

THE GOOD: Much like Ryan King coming into the support group, I was very skeptical of this show going on but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought I might find a niche show along the lines of Community that doesn't have my brand of humor. Instead, I found a show with several laughs and a whole lot of heart. Matthew Perry is so much better in this show than in the failed Mr. Sunshine where he was an extremely negative character. Now, despite his character's grief, he is very likable and showed his vulnerability at the end of the episode. There were many great lines delivered by Perry in a way only he can (such as telling his replacement he was "not strong"). The supporting cast is good too, particularly Laura Benanti who seems like a good foil for Perry. The "March Sadness" bit was a funny twist to grief counseling as well. All in all, the show really got off to a good start.

THE BAD: Like any new show, there are growing pains involved and I wonder how this premise translates to a full season. I did wonder that more before I started watching because now I can see where some of these characters might be headed or how to further develop them. Brett Gehlman's character seems awfully out of place though and not funny. All of these characters are real people going through real things and he seems like an odd presence among them. I know that's the point, but it just doesn't work for me. Hopefully they give his character more to do than just be weird because that will get old fast.

BOTTOM LINE: Despite the fact that Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip fell apart and Mr. Sunshine never lived up to its potential, I still like having Matthew Perry back on TV. And this seems like it might be his best role since Chandler. The show got a great sampling last night but I'm not sure what people will think of this comedy-drama hybrid. I know that I like it though. I want to see where these characters go and the more tension between Perry and Benanti, the better. Seeing Perry as a little child-like even in his grief is something that Mr. Sunshine and Studio 60 lacked. Welcome back to NBC, Chandler. Let's hope this show goes on for awhile.
