RENEWAL ALERT: Glee, New Girl, Raising Hope

In a relatively unsurprising move, FOX has renewed three Tuesday comedies for next season - Glee, New Girl, and Raising Hope. Glee and Girl were givens while Hope was not but FOX has said they want to expand in comedy so that's not too surprising either.

Glee was renewed for a fourth season. The show became a phenomenon at the end of its first season and beginning of its second season. Though it has cooled considerably since then, it remains a young skewing show with a very loyal following. Some of the main characters are graduating high school this year so it remains to be seen how they will be included next year. Through 14 episodes, Glee has averaged 7.8 million viewers and a good 3.3 demo.

New Girl was a breakout new hit in the fall for FOX, regularly building on Glee's lead-in and putting up stellar demo numbers. FOX has mangled the scheduling of this show, pulling it after three weeks for baseball and preemptions and then surrounding it with nothing this spring after Glee went on hiatus. This has contributed to less impressive ratings but a renewal was never in doubt. It isn't ready to be an anchor yet but it is still a success story for FOX. Through 19 episodes, it has averaged 6.9 million viewers and a 3.4 demo.

Finally, Raising Hope was renewed for a third season. This is the lowest rated show of the three renewed but it managed to have a pretty steady audience and then didn't completely fall apart when it moved to 8pm a few weeks ago. The show also boasted an Emmy nomination for Martha Plimpton in its first season and FOX wants to add comedy so the renewal should not be considered a huge surprise. Through the 19 episodes that have aired in regular timeslots, it has averaged 4.9 million viewers and a 2.2 demo.

These three renewals join American Dad!, Bones, The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, Kitchen Nightmares, The Simpsons, and The X-Factor on the slate for next year with American Idol sure to join that list. Still up in the air are Alcatraz, Bob's Burgers, Breaking In, Cops, The Finder, Fringe, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, Napoleon Dynamite, Q'Viva: The Chosen, and Touch. From those shows, Touch and perhaps a final season of Fringe are the most likely renewals. Breaking In, The Finder, Teenage Daughter, and Q'Viva are as good as done. Burgers and Napoleon could go either way while FOX has announced that it will be cutting back its order of the long running Cops as that show may head in the direction of America's Most Wanted.

During the month of December, I will be looking back at the decade that was the 2010s on TV. I will be sharing my favorite sitcoms, dramas, the best episodes, the best performances and the worst shows of the decade. To be eligible for this list, a show had to air the majority of its episodes in the 2010s. EPISODE GUIDES: Rhoda Season Five

On Thursdays, I go through classic series with a critical look at each season. Today I am looking at Season Five (the final season) of Rhoda ! RHODA: SEASON FIVE 1978 13 episodes Rhoda' s final season was a truncated one as the show was cancelled in December 1978 after only 13 episodes had been produced (and only nine had aired). This feels like a continuation from season four in many ways except with the ill-advised split between Ida and Martin (more on that below).
