UPFRONTS 2018: What NBC Should Do

Welcome to another season of Upfronts! This week, I will give my suggestions for each network. Next week will bring my schedule predictions and the following week will have the official schedules! I will make my usual caveat that I have not read or seen any pilots so my suggestions are based on the limited information I have on them and what I've been reading about buzz for them.

In general, I tend to favor launching and picking up more pilots. I think it raises the chances for success and if things do work, well then some of the shows on the bench could be saved for summer. NBC's continued success with The Voice, This is Us, and the Chicago shows not to mention football masks the fact that they struggled to launch anything new this year with Good Girls probably the most solid and that's shaky at best. If you count Will & Grace as a new show, that would have been their biggest success but even that dropped from a 3.0 demo premiere to below a 1.0 demo by the end of the season. They need to keep launching new shows and maybe they'll find something that hits like This is Us did in a big way two years ago.

Past NBC suggestions: 2017   2016   2015   2014   2013   2012   2011

MONDAYS
8:00 The Voice
10:00 THE ENEMY WITHIN
I thought The Brave was a great choice for a post-Voice slot last year, but that obviously didn't work out so maybe it needs to go back to the thriller genre that worked for The Blacklist in this slot as well as Blindspot to a lesser degree. The Enemy Within sounds a little like The Blacklist and if it gets a ton of promotion in the summer, seems like it could get some interest.

TUESDAYS
8:00 The Voice
9:00 This is Us
10:00 THE VILLAGE
NBC used their huge This is Us lead-in this year on an ill-advised true crime show (Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders) and a third year show (Chicago Med). It's time to try their biggest scripted lead-in on a compatible show. The Village seems to fit in that category the best.

WEDNESDAYS
8:00 MANIFEST
9:00 Chicago PD
10:00 Law & Order: SVU
OK, so Manifest sounds an awful lot like Lost. So why not take a flier and let it have the timeslot that Lost started off in for ABC back in 2004. If they can market it the right way, they might be able to draw people in. It could have a revival effect without actually being a revival. I think it's worth a shot. I would also swap Chicago PD and Law & Order: SVU. SVU is not going to last many more years (though I know that's been said forever). Let it run one more year on Wednesday and then move it to Friday or something like that but it's time to start letting Chicago PD be the anchor of the night.

THURSDAYS
8:00 Superstore
8:30 ABBY'S
9:00 Will & Grace
9:30 The Good Place
10:00 Chicago Fire
NBC did wrong by Chicago Fire this year with lead-ins from Great News and Champions. Yet it did very well given the circumstances. So I would not put another unproven show at 9:30pm. I would take their most promising comedy pilot - Abby's - and sandwich it between Superstore and Will & Grace. NBC doesn't have a great slot for comedies anywhere, but this is their best bet.

FRIDAYS
8:00 NEW AMSTERDAM
9:00 The Blacklist
10:00 Dateline NBC
I certainly hope NBC will be aggressive this year on Fridays and why not try a medical drama that could have an old skew and perhaps tap into the CBS Friday audience. The Blacklist did enough on Wednesday to get renewed in my opinion, but I think it's time to be a Friday show and maybe have it be its final season.

SATURDAYS
8:00 Encores

SUNDAYS
7:00 Football Night in America
8:30 Sunday Night Football
Of course. Midseason needs to revamp in a big way for Sundays. I would try something like Ellen's Game of Games at 8pm, LA's Finest at 9pm, and The Gilded Age at 10pm (though Gilded could be held for summer).

MIDSEASON: FRIENDS-IN-LAW, THE GILDED AGE, GUESS WHO DIED, LA'S FINEST, NO WAY BACK, SO CLOSE, Better Late Than Never, Chicago Med, Ellen's Game of Games, Good Girls, Little Big Shots, Rise, The Wall
I already mentioned what I would do for Sundays. I would make Chicago Med the first show off the bench again wherever there's a need. It could work in pretty much any of the new drama slots I listed above. For The Voice hiatus, they will have a little bit more time without the Olympics so I would do some unscripted stuff and also short orders (8 episodes or so) for some fliers on current midseason shows, even Rise, which has been low but steady. If The Enemy Within works, I'd hold it and let it come back with The Voice So I would do something like: Mon: The Wall/Better Late Than Never/Good Girls, Tues: Little Big Shots/This is Us/The Village or Rise. The new comedies can be used for when Will & Grace and The Good Place end or if Abby's fails.

CANCELLED/ENDED: A.P. Bio, Blindspot, The Brave, Champions, Genius Junior, Great News, Law & Order: True Crime, Taken, Timeless

THE WEEK AHEAD: April 23-29, 2018

Here's a look at Week #31!

ABC
ABC has a mix of repeats and new episodes this week. Tuesday brings repeats of four of the first five episodes of Roseanne followed by a special airing of Deception. It will be interesting to see how Deception does in a different slot. Wednesday brings two airings of Alex, Inc. with repeat lead-ins and a number similar to last week's 0.6 demo seems likely for this show which is sort of being treated like a burn-off. Thursday is the season premiere of Quantico, which did not do anything to deserve a third season last year and will probably be a big drop off from the already diminished Scandal.

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- ABC has given a series order to the untitled Goldbergs spinoff. After passing on the pilot last year, ABC aired it as a special episode this year and has now decided to give it a go. It will center on supporting Goldbergs characters played by Tim Meadows, Bryan Callen, and AJ Michalka and will be set in the 1990s or the decade after The Goldbergs.

- NBC has yanked Taken off the schedule and it will finish its season 2 run on Saturdays at 8PM starting May 26. NBC will air two hours of Dateline for the time being. Despite the low pressure Friday slot, Taken has posted embarrassingly low numbers. It was a surprise renewal for this year but a season 3 seems even more unlikely.

- Another yanking: CBS has yanked Living Biblically off the schedule in a de facto cancellation. It could return to the schedule at a later date but that's iffy at best. It will be replaced for the time being by repeats of The Big Bang Theory.

- CBS announced renewals for dramas NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles, Bull, MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, and Madam Secretary as well as reality shows Survivor, The Amazing Race, 60 Minutes, and 48 Hours. Aside from Madam Secretary, these were all pretty expected. Still on the bubble for CBS is Scorpion, Criminal Minds, Kevin Can Wait, Man with a Plan, Life in Pieces, and Superior Donuts while freshmen 9JKL, Instinct, and the just yanked Living Biblically are unlikely to come back. Code Black and Elementary return to the schedule in the next couple weeks and CBS may not make a decision on those two shows before Upfronts.

- ABC renewed Grey's Anatomy for its 15th season. The long running medical drama is a cornerstone of the ABC lineup and has shown no signs of slowing down.

SPECIAL COMMENTARY: Scandal - A Cautionary Tale

Scandal ends tonight on ABC after seven seasons and 124 episodes and I have been all over the map with this show.

I don't remember being super excited about Scandal when it was first announced at the 2011 Upfronts. Despite being a political drama, which I am generally interested in, I wasn't too excited about the idea of a "fixer" (remember, this was well before the Trump presidency when that was an everyday term). When it premiered in April 2012, I gave lots of praise to Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope in my pilot review, but I didn't think it was a runaway blockbuster and viewers agreed as it premiered to decent but still modest numbers.

Then came Season 2 and Scandal morphed from a fairly tame show that mostly followed a case of the week to a twist-filled, "OMG" moment drama that became must see TV every Thursday night. The show started a meteoric rise in the ratings and became one of the most talked about shows on TV. There was a time in its second season where I probably would have said Scandal was my favorite show on TV. The breakneck pace of storytelling and the constant ability to surprise was so exciting and the diverse cast was dynamite. I think in the back of my head, I knew it was not sustainable over many seasons but I was going to enjoy the ride while it lasted.

Phase three of Scandal came over the next couple years where Scandal did not maintain the consistently strong storytelling but it was still capable of being one of TV's best. Episodes like "The Lawn Chair" or storylines like the Republican Primary with Mellie Grant, Susan Ross, and Hollis Doyle were as good as anything Scandal ever offered. But it was clear that this show didn't always know where it was going and as stories got convoluted and twisted around, it started to all feel like a lot of "the same." Sometimes I'll think back and realize I don't even remember what happened to certain characters who were major players at one point while other characters like Olivia's mother and father just kept having stories that went in circles. I can remember almost everything about that wild second season but I feel like I can barely remember any details from some of the later seasons even though they happened more recently.

The final, sad phase of Scandal happened this year where it became a show I could care less about. I found it becoming one of those Modern Family-like shows where I'm watching it out of obligation. There's a few other shows ending this year that I'm still watching: I still love The Middle (more on that in a couple weeks) and I still think New Girl has some great moments. But Scandal? It's been an awfully long time since I've enjoyed it though I thought last week gave me a little hope that the series finale might recover a little spark. Scandal was never going to be a show that runs for hundreds of episodes like Law & Order: SVU or its lead-in for its entire run, Grey's Anatomy (remember when Grey's seemed like a show that was on its way out and Scandal was as hot as it comes?) But Scandal burned brighter and burned out quicker than a lot of shows. And why did that happen?

I think more than anything, it became a victim of its own hype. When Scandal first started getting hot, everyone was caught by surprise and I think that even includes Shonda Rhimes and the cast. When they were making the episodes that became so buzzworthy, they were just focused on interesting storytelling. Then came the live tweeting, the magazine covers, the talk show appearances, and the hype. And Scandal started to feel the need to outdo itself. Cast members would add to the hype by talking about their jaws dropping open at the table reads. ABC would hype it to no end with the latest "OMG you will never believe this twist" teases. Shonda and her team of writers seemed to focus far more on plot twists than actual plots and soon enough Scandal became a mess. It was like an alcoholic's life. At first, it was tantalizing and fun. Then it was sometimes fun but sometimes problematic and finally, it was just sad and troubled. Despite the best efforts of the cast this week, there seems to be very little interest in Scandal's series finale. Fans have abandoned ship over the years of weak storytelling and there aren't all that many left.

And that is a shame because there were so many good things about Scandal from its progressive storylines to its slick production quality. Most of all, it had a terrific cast led by the incomparable Kerry Washington, the first black female lead in a drama in decades who earned much deserved acclaim for her role and became a fashion icon. Washington's performance is what hooked me on Scandal in the first place and she's probably the main reason I still watch even if they have done some terrible things with her character. So I will watch the final Scandal tonight and hope it gives me some satisfaction for the years I've stuck with it. And maybe someday I'll go back and watch the first couple seasons to remember all this show was and could have been.

THE WEEK AHEAD: April 16-22, 2018

Here's a look at Week #30!

ABC
ABC has a mostly new week with some repeats on Wednesday. A special airing of Alex, Inc. gets the post-Roseanne slot for the week which should easily help the low-rated Wednesday show get more exposure. Thursday night brings the series finale of Scandal but there seems to be little interest in the once very popular show especially since its 10pm move a few weeks ago. I'll have more thoughts on Scandal on Thursday so check back!

TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- CBS has renewed Mom for a sixth season. Airing after hit freshman Young Sheldon has helped Mom quite a bit as it is one of the few shows that is up in the ratings from last season. Mom joins The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, S.W.A.T., and SEAL Team on the early renewal list for CBS.

- Later in the week, CBS also announced a renewal for veteran drama NCIS for its 16th (!) season. Series star Mark Harmon signed a deal to continue with the show, which paved a way for a renewal that was never in doubt.

- NBC announced that new sci-fi drama Reverie will premiere May 30 at 10pm while Marlon will begin its second season with a double batch of episodes on June 14 at 9pm.

- The CW announced that summer dramas The Outpost and Burden of Truth will premiere on consecutive nights in July: July 10 and 11 at 8pm. Additionally, returning unscripted summer shows Whose Line is it Anyway, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and Masters of Illusion all have June premiere dates.

- Among the season finale date announcement by ABC were the announcements of series finales for two long running shows. Once Upon a Time will come to an end on May 18 at 8pm while the one hour series finale of The Middle airs on May 22 at 8:30pm.

- NBC announced the second season of comedy Trial & Error will begin on July 19 with back to back episodes at 9pm. This season will feature Kristin Chenoweth as the accused and is subtitled Lady Killer.

THE WEEK AHEAD: April 9-15, 2018

Here's a look at Week #29!

ABC
ABC has its regular lineup all week except for Sunday night where the first interview with James Comey ahead of his book release will air instead of Deception and could draw a decent audience. Roseanne was down for week two but still easily TV's #1 show. It will be interesting to see how things go in week three. It will of course go down some more but probably less of a percentage drop than week one to week two.

NBC
NBC has its regular lineup all week including Thursday when they are planning to air repeats of Will & Grace in the 9pm slot for the rest of the season. They are giving Chicago Fire terrible lead-ins. They should cancel Champions, move Chicago Fire to 9pm for the rest of the season, and air repeats or Dateline at 10pm. TV NEWS & THOUGHTS
- The CW has renewed 11 series for next year. This includes no brainers like The Flash, Arrow, Supernatural (for its 14th season!), Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Riverdale, and the new Black Lightning. It also includes critically acclaimed but low rated Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It will be Crazy's final season and could be Jane's as well. The biggest surprise renewal happened for Dynasty, but this is clearly a decision based on factors other than ratings since it got a 0.1 demo already this year. No decision has been made yet on Valor, Life Sentence, iZombie, or the yet to premiere The 100 though it seems like Valor and Life Sentence are as good as dead.

- NBC has decided that the upcoming Season 3 will be the last for Shades of Blue. The Jennifer Lopez cop drama will have its final season premiere on June 17 at 10pm.

- The CW has picked up the Canadian Kristen Kreuk drama Burden of Truth for a run this summer.

PILOT REVIEW: The Crossing

THE CROSSING

Starring: Steve Zahn, Natalie Martinez, Sandrine Holt, Tommy Bastow, Rob Campbell, Rick Gomez, Marcuis W. Harris, Grant Harvey, Jay Karnes, Simone Kessell, Kelley Missal, Luc Roderique, Bailey Skodje

Created by Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie
Written by Dan Dworkin & Jay Beattie, Directed by Rob Bowman

THE PREMISE
The Crossing is a new sci-fi drama about a small Oregon town that is upended when refugees start showing up, fleeing a war. The sci-fi element to this is the refugees are escaping the United States from 180 years in the future and coming back to the "gold old days" of America, a.k.a. present day. At the center is local Sheriff Jude Ellis (Steve Zahn) who is clashing with Federal Agent Emma Ren (Sandrine Holt) while also working with one of the refugees who showed up later, Reece (Natalie Martinez). Rounding out the rest of the cast are agents and refugees, including some who may have special powers and others who may have been around a lot longer than the ones who just arrived.

THE REVIEW
Lost was an iconic show on ABC but it premiered in 2004. Here we are nearly 14 years later and networks, especially ABC, are still trying to find the next one. In fact, the announcer said right before The Crossing premiered it was "from the network that brought you Lost." So while there were definitely intriguing elements of The Crossing and I'll get to that, there is no part of me that thinks it is going to have a different fate than shows like Invasion, The Event, Resurrection, Believe, Last Resort, The River, etc. And that is to say, it has a cool hook for a premise, but it seems likely it will open a lot of doors and will either struggle to answer things
and/or get cancelled before it has a chance to.

Of course, as is so often the case with these shows, it is a good premise. I like the idea of a time travel show but where present day America is trying to figure out future America, not to mention being seen as the "good old days." I know it's not the first time travel show to deal with the future, but it does feel a little bit different especially after the onslaught of time travel shows last season that all went to various times in history. The opening was bizarre and although the premise is interesting, it was a slow burn. The show struggled to immediately have a "moment" which is important in pilots for shows like this.

The cast is solid though I feel like I have seen a lot of them on failed ABC shows over the years. I liked Steve Zahn as the sheriff even if he's playing the common type of authoritative small town leader clashing with the feds. Sandrine Holt and Natalie Martinez are always solid and I feel like I've seen them in a lot of shows. They've actually always reminded me of each other so I don't know how good it is that they're in the same show and playing very different types of characters. So I liked some elements of the pilot, I just know where this is going to go and I don't mean the exact story, I mean the general trajectory. Maybe someday we'll truly have the next Lost, but I don't think it will be a show that's so transparently trying to replicate that lightning in a bottle.

WILL I WATCH IT AGAIN?
Against my better judgement, I'll probably watch one more.
