Ahead of tonight's return to new episodes (with new comedy Weird Loners), FOX announced today that New Girl has been renewed for a fifth season. The show has had an interesting ride on the FOX schedule. It was an early breakout hit when it premiered in 2011 but it has been on a downward trend for awhile. It completely crashed during its critically maligned third season in 2013-14, but has been more steady in the ratings and more critically appreciated this season. Series regular Damon Wayans Jr. has already announced he won't be back next season.

New Girl joins Bob's Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Empire, Gotham, Masterchef Junior, The Simpsons, and Sleepy Hollow on the renewal list for next week. Family Guy is sure to join that list and its looking good for Bones, Hell's Kitchen, The Last Man on Earth, and The Mindy Project. I think it's not looking as good for The Following and Backstrom appears to be dead.
