Monday night had a stunning result on CBS as Under the Dome had the best summer premiere for a show in six years and the best drama debut for ANY CBS drama since Hawaii Five-0 way back in September 2010. Yes, Dome beat the series premieres of CBS hits like Person of Interest and Elementary. It had a stunning 3.3 demo in a late June premiere and airing against the highly rated Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. This sort of performance could revolutionize scripted TV in the summer if the numbers stay strong in the weeks to come. Elsewhere, The Bachelorette benefited from no competition from The Voice as it was up 1.1 million viewers and three tenths in the demo for a season high. At 10pm, Mistresses was down two tenths in viewers and the demo for a series low.

Sunday night had two new series on ABC and NBC. The reality show Whodunnit? on ABC was slightly more successful but it still had a fairly anemic 1.3 demo debut. Still for a summer reality show, this is acceptable enough if it can stay here. It also matched its lead-in, a new episode of Celebrity Wife Swap. The NBC debut of French drama Crossing Lines was actually on par with Whodunnit? in total viewers but it had a terrible 0.7 demo for its two hour premiere.

PILOT REVIEW: Under the Dome

UNDER THE DOME

Starring: Mike Vogel, Rachelle LeFevre, Natalie Martinez, Britt Robertson, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, Nicholas Strong, Jolene Purdy, Aisha Hinds, with Jeff Fahey, and Dean Norris

Based on the Book by Stephen King, Developed by Brian K. Vaughan
Teleplay by Brian K. Vaughan, Directed by Niels Arden Oplev

Under the Dome is a new sci-fi/mystery series based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. The small town of Chester's Mill is rocked when a mysterious occurrence happens that basically puts the entire town in a bubble that no one can enter or exit through thanks to an invisible wall. The lead characters are the many who are trapped inside Chester's Mill including the veteran police chief "Duke" (Jeff Fahey), a councilman (Dean Norris), and a mysterious outsider (Mike Vogel) who was seemingly trying to escape before the dome hit.

THE GOOD: This was a captivating pilot with a premise that is unlike anything else on TV. The characters were set up with enough mystery and intrigue before the big event happened. I thought the pilot moved quite well which is especially good considering how easily this series could have gotten bogged down in exposition. The show seemed to be able to leave enough things hanging without being frustrating to viewers so far. Most of the actors are good and I'm thrilled to see two stars from the short-lived but excellent Detroit 1-8-7 in this cast.

THE BAD: This is one of those shows that had a really strong pilot but I worry for future weeks that it will become murky and complicated. I hope the writers can avoid that because it was set up well for success. While I liked most of the actors, I though Alexander Koch was weak which is troubling since his character seems to be integral to the story and mystery.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a great start to a show and a very ambitious summer offering from a network that doesn't usually do scripted shows in the summer. I hope they can keep the mystery rolling without leaving too many dangling plotlines and without getting overly complicated in the mythology. For now though, it has sucked me in and I will definitely be returning to the dome next Monday.

PILOT REVIEW: Crossing Lines

CROSSING LINES

Starring: William Fichtner, Marc Lavoine, Gabriella Pession, Tom Wlaschiha, Moon Dailly, Richard Flood, with Genevieve O'Reilly, and Donald Sutherland

Created by Edward Allen Bernero
Written by Edward Allen Bernero, Directed by Daniel Percival

Crossing Lines is a new European drama being broadcast on NBC this summer. It centers on a special crime unit from the International Criminal Court as they attempt to solve murders that involve multiple countries. At the head of the unit is Major Louis Daniel (Marc Lavoine), with the backing of veteran Michel Dorn (Donald Sutherland). Daniel recruits a team of crime solvers including a drug-addicted but brilliant ex-NYPD officer Carl Hickman (William Fichtner). In the two hour series premiere, they attempt to find a man who is murdering women in different countries and essentially erasing their identities.

THE GOOD: The thing that sets this show apart from being a by-the-numbers crime procedural is the international setting. The European setting gives it a feel of escapism and freshness that would probably otherwise not be there. The cast is solid and it's great they were able to get Donald Sutherland. Although playing basically the same type of character Kevin Bacon played in The Following, William Fichtner is solid as the tortured hero. The case in the pilot was interesting and it didn't feel like two hours. A twist at the end was daring for a procedural.

THE BAD: Even with the international feel, there were plenty of crime procedural cliches. The entire team filling in the details of Hickman's life and the way they all described the case felt a lot like the worst parts of Criminal Minds. They also did another very Criminal Minds-like interrogation of a witness where he was placed back in the crime scene. They never work on Minds that well and it didn't work here. It's easy to see that these shows were by the same creator. I like both shows but the flaws of Minds were present here too.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a solid summer entry by NBC and actually probably could have been a good option during the season. The international setting is really what makes this show but the characters and acting are good too. I actually may watch more episodes which is rare for me for a summer show.

Tuesday night saw the NBA Finals dominate but the finale of The Voice held its own against the competition. First on NBC, America's Got Talent was up three tenths in viewers and even in the demo from last week when it aired at 9pm. The season four finale of The Voice was up a big 4.9 million viewers and 1.5 demo points. The demo was down from the fall finale but the total viewers were the best ever for a finale. The franchise will be back in just a few months with its original four coaches back. Finally, So You Think You Can Dance wilted against the competition as it fell three tenths in the demo to a low 1.4.

On Monday night, NBC aired the final performance night of The Voice and it was up eight tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo for its best numbers since May 13. At 10pm, week two of The Winner Is... built in a tenth in the demo from its premiere last week. However, it has to fly on its own from now on. Over on ABC, The Bachelorette was down a tenth in the demo. It will not have to face The Voice next week so it'll be interesting to see if it can grow. At 10pm, Mistresses was back down to the 1.2 demo it premiered with two weeks ago after a small jump last week.

Tuesday night had ABC dominating with the NBA Finals Game 3. Though it is down from last year, each game has been pretty steady. NBC held up fairly well against the competition though as The Voice was down two tenths in viewers and the demo while America's Got Talent was actually up three tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. It built on its lead-in despite having to face the actual game. Finally, Brooklyn DA was down a tenth for CBS while So You Think You Can Dance was even for FOX.

On Monday night, NBC was on top as usual as The Voice was up six tenths in viewers and even in the demo. At 10pm, the series premiere of The Winner Is... posted decent numbers and its retention out of The Voice was not much worse than Revolution. However, it's likely to fall apart when The Voice ends next week. On ABC, The Bachelorette was up a tenth in the demo. It will probably rise in the ratings when The Voice ends. At 10pm, week two of Mistresses was actually up two tenths in the demo from its premiere which is a good sign that it will be a decent player this summer. Finally on FOX, The Goodwin Games was down a tenth in the demo while Anger Management was even.

On Tuesday night, it was all about NBC. The Voice moved to 8pm and was up half a million viewers but down a tenth in the demo from last week. The season premiere of America's Got Talent followed at 9pm and held the demo from The Voice to a very solid 3.1 demo over the two hour premiere. Over on ABC, Extreme Weight  Loss was down two tenths in the demo from its weak season premiere last week. Brooklyn DA was down a rough three tenths in the demo from its poor debut last week for CBS. Finally on FOX, So You Think You Can Dance was down six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo as it may have been negatively impacted by the reality combo on NBC.

Monday night had the series premiere of Mistresses on ABC and the season finale of Revolution on ABC. First up with ABC, The Bachelorette was down three tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's weak premiere. Is it being this negatively affected by The Voice or is the franchise tiring? Mistresses had a pretty weak premiere at 10pm as it doesn't look like a real solid option for ABC. On NBC, The Voice was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while the season finale of Revolution was down a tenth in viewers and up a tenth in the demo for its best number since May 6. It will head to Wednesdays at 8pm in the fall which will be a tough slot. Finally on FOX, The Goodwin Games was up a tenth in the demo while a special airing of FX's Anger Management was only up a tenth from last week's repeat of The Mindy Project.

PILOT REVIEW: Mistresses

MISTRESSES

Starring: Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes, Jes McCallan, Brett Tucker, Jason George, Erik Stocklin

Developed for American television by KJ Steinberg
Teleplay by KJ Steinberg, Directed by Cherie Nowlan

Mistresses is a soap opera based on a British series of the same name. The show centers on four female friends (Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes, and Jes McCallan) involved in extramarital and scandalous affairs. All the women are at varying levels of success and happiness in their own lives but have each other to cry to and share secrets with. Rounding out the main cast are three men in their lives (Brett Tucker, Jason George, and Erik Stocklin).

THE GOOD: There are some good performances here. I like Alyssa Milano in pretty much anything back to Who's the Boss? and she is solid again here. The show is actually less steamy than it may have led you to believe (more on that later). The storylines are interesting for the most part, particularly Yunjin Kim's potential affair with the son of her former and now dead lover (which was also an affair). That storyline has the most intrigue and mystery and potential danger in my eyes.

THE BAD: This show's promos were actually pretty misleading. The pilot was bookended with some very steamy scenes but in-between it was a soapy melodrama and that appears to be more of what it's going to be. The truth is that while there are decent performances, there's not enough to save it from being just another ABC soap. In recent years, we have seen soaps turned on their heads by adding in revenge elements (Revenge) or political elements (Scandal) but this just doesn't bring anything new to the table. Maybe the hook is the adultery? But that happens pretty much every week on Scandal anyway and that show is a lot more involved. It's all gloss and no substance in this show.

BOTTOM LINE: While not my cup of tea at all, I can see why this is a summer show on ABC because it fits the network's brand and the feel of a summer show quite well. The problem is that there just isn't much to it yet it seems like it wants to be taken seriously. It might have been better if it had simply been a steamy show or a more carefully constructed relationship drama but instead it's a slightly awkward hybrid. And Alyssa Milano still needs to find a show with more substance.

There was a lot of new programming on Thursday night. On CBS, the delayed season finale of Mike & Molly with a tornado storyline. It posted a series low but it was a special time in the summer so that's nothing to stress over. The show doesn't have a timeslot for fall but will probably be the first sub in if/when one of CBS' four new sitcoms fails. Over on ABC, Wipeout and Rookie Blue were even in the demo while Motive was down a tenth. The total viewer numbers for Motive and Rookie are respectable for the summer. On NBC, Save Me was down a tenth from its very low premiere last week while the just-renewed Hannibal was even in the demo at a low 1.0. NBC is going to have to try to re-launch this show next spring. Finally on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was down a tenth in the demo while week two of Does Someone Have to Go? was down a troubling three tenths in the demo. This show is a pretty poor option for FOX. A Hell's Kitchen repeat would probably do better.
