On Wednesday night, ABC's lineup returned from the Christmas break with new episodes and every show was up from their last new airing. At 8pm, The Middle was up 1.1 million viewers and three tenths in the demo for its best demo since November 14. At 8:30pm, The Neighbors rebounded from its drop before Christmas as it was up 1.3 million viewers and half a demo point. It will be interesting to see how this show holds up through the winter. At 9pm, Modern Family was up 1.1 million viewers and half a demo point and Suburgatory was up seven tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo. At 10pm, Nashville lost head to head with Chicago Fire but posted its best demo since the series premiere as it was down a tenth in viewers and up two tenths in the demo. Despite the head to head loss, this is a promising return from the break.

NBC was down across the board with the increased competition but the news wasn't bad for the dramas. At 8pm though, the comedies took a big hit. Whitney was down nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo while Guys with Kids was down four tenths in viewers and also four tenths in the demo. At 9pm, Law & Order: SVU was up seven tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo while Chicago Fire was down half a million viewers and two tenths in the demo. The NBC dramas actually held up pretty well and Chicago Fire, in particular, was impressive as it beat Nashville head to head. These shows suffer more when CBS has its crime procedurals on but this is encouraging for NBC. CBS had decent numbers from I Get That a Lot and the People's Choice Awards while FOX had nothing from a Celebrity Diving special which doesn't bode well for ABC's upcoming Celebrity Diving series.
