SEASON IN REVIEW: The 2012 Emmy Nominations

Here are the nominations for the major categories of the Emmy Awards!

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Breaking Bad (AMC)
Downton Abbey (PBS)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
Homeland (Showtime)
Mad Men (AMC)
Comments: No major surprises here but it is worth noting that The Good Wife did not make the cut which means no broadcast network dramas are represented here as part of a general trend in that direction. This race will likely be a three-headed one between Breaking Bad, Homeland, and Mad Men.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Michael C. Hall, Dexter (Showtime)
Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
Damian Lewis, Homeland (Showtime)
Comments: Once again, no broadcast network representation as Hugh Laurie was passed over in his final year meaning he will have never won for his memorable character of Dr. Gregory House despite six nominations. This race seems to be Bryan Cranston's to lose.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law (NBC)
Glenn Close, Damages (DirecTV)
Claire Danes, Homeland (Showtime)
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife (CBS)
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men (AMC)
Comments: Finally some broadcast network representation! The nomination for last year's winner Julianna Marguiles is not surprising but the nomination for Kathy Bates for the cancelled Harry's Law really is. If they were going with a broadcast network representative, Madeleine Stowe would have been much more deserving. This race will probably come down to Marguiles and Claire Danes with Danes having the early edge.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Jim Carter, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Brendan Coyle, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (HBO)
Giancarlo Esposito, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Jared Harris, Mad Men (AMC)
Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Comments: Major shakeups in this category as only last year's winner Peter Dinklage is back on the nominee list. He could be a contender again but the Breaking Bad actors are most likely the favorites. The return of that show after a year off really impacted the drama nods.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife (CBS)
Joanne Froggart, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad (AMC)
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men (AMC)
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife (CBS)
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey (PBS)
Comments: The Good Wife and Downton Abbey take up 2/3 of this category and I think this one is anyone's race at this point.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
30 Rock (NBC)
The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
Girls (HBO)
Modern Family (ABC)
Veep (HBO)
Comments: Last year, all six nominees were from broadcast networks but this year HBO took half of those spots with Curb Your Enthusiasm coming back to the category as well as freshman hits Girls and Veep. Parks and Recreation was a MAJOR snub in this category, perhaps the biggest snub in the whole nominations list. Still, this looks like another year for Modern Family to win.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC)
Louis C.K., Louie (FX)
Don Cheadle, House of Lies (Showtime)
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO)
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Comments: Several changes here as Jon Cryer scored a nod in his first year nominated in the lead actor category while Larry David returned to the category with Two and a Half Men and Don Cheadle got a surprise nomination for his first year series House of Lies. Despite these changes, it might be Jim Parsons as the favorite to win for a third year in a row.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Zooey Deschanel, New Girl (FOX)
Lena Dunham, Girls (HBO)
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
Tina Fey, 30 Rock (NBC)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep (HBO)
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly (CBS)
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Comments: For some reason, there are seven nominees in this fiercely competitive category that includes buzzy stars of new series in Zooey Deschanel, Lena Dunham, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Despite the snub for best series, this might be Amy Poehler's year because I don't see Melissa McCarthy repeating. But one of the newcomers could easily snag this as well.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Ty Burrell, Modern Family (ABC)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family (ABC)
Max Greenfield, New Girl (FOX)
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family (ABC)
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family (ABC)
Comments: All the Modern Family men are nominated yet again. Eric Stonestreet won the first year and Ty Burrell the second year, will it be Jesse Tyler Ferguson or Ed O'Neill this time? Nick Offerman was snubbed once again for Parks and Recreation but there were somewhat surprising, yet deserving, nominations for Max Greenfield and Bill Hader.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Julie Bowen, Modern Family (ABC)
Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives (ABC)
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family (ABC)
Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Comments: The supporting actress category includes a posthumous nomination for previous winner Kathryn Joosten. Julie Bowen might be the favorite again unless there is a sentimental vote for Joosten or the departing Kristen Wiig.

On Thursday night, CBS had the season premiere of summer staple Big Brother. It premiered to a good 7.2 million viewers and 2.6 demo. While better than most summer programming this side of America's Got Talent, it was below last year's premiere and couldn't match the Big Bang Theory repeat that served as its lead-in. However, it's been a rough summer for original programming so this is a good enough performance. Elsewhere, Wipeout was the strong show on ABC's lineup with a 1.8 demo while Duets continued to limp along. NBC didn't have much but Rock Center was up to a 1.2 demo, which is one of its better performances ever. Finally, FOX saw a big drop for The Choice after last week's decent jump.

On Tuesday night, ABC had a couple premieres. The improv comedy show Trust Us With Your Life did nothing at 9pm despite having some old friends from Whose Line Is It Anyway? The documentary series NY Med did a little better at 10pm, particularly in total viewers, but it was nothing spectacular. Elsewhere, NBC's unscripted combo was up from last week and the MLB All Star Game did very good numbers for FOX.

IN MEMORIAM: Andy Griffith, 1926-2012

One of the great classic sitcom actors, Andy Griffith, died today at the age of 86. Griffith's career spanned over 60 years and included television, movies, recording, and stage work. He was a Grammy Award winning artist who recorded many Christian and Gospel albums and was well known for his lead role in the long running drama Matlock (1986-1995).

But to most people, he will always be remembered as Sheriff Andy Taylor, the kind moral center of small town Mayberry, NC on the classic sitcom The Andy Griffith Show from 1960-1968. The show was a starring vehicle for Griffith but when the ensemble cast proved to be such an interesting and wacky crew including Don Knotts as Barney Fife and Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle, Griffith became the straight man in the show and he did it with excellence. Andy Taylor was always kind, always gentle, and always fair. He was a beacon of moral values in his relationships with his friends, jail dwellers, and especially his son Opie (Ron Howard). The Andy Griffith Show did more with subtle comedy than most shows of its era and today. It never went for the big punchlines, it just created wonderful characters that the audience cared about. To audiences then, it was an escape from the turbulent 1960s. To audiences now, it is a idyllic slice of life from a simpler time. The show had big staying power too. It was #1 in the ratings when Griffith decided to end the show in 1968 and it has been one of the most successful rerun shows on all time as it aired on TBS and then TV Land for years (and still does).

We will miss you, Sheriff Taylor. Thanks for the memories.
