It's finally August which means we are closer to September and the return of TV to talk about on the broadcast networks. At 9pm, Expedition: Impossible was up four tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo, rebounding from last week's lows and showing nice growth for the first time all summer. It probably isn't enough to bring it back next summer though. At 10pm, Rookie Blue was down half a million viewers for a season low and even in the demo. Over on CBS, Big Brother was up two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. Finally on FOX, So You Think You Can Dance was up a tenth in viewers and the demo from last week's Thursday episode.

Another summer night, another boring ratings report. Don't worry, this site will be much more interesting in the fall again! CBS had a new Big Brother which was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. NBC aired a new Minute to Win It at 8pm - this show does better in the same slot in the summer than during the year. At 9pm, the results night of America's Got Talent was up four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from last week's lows. Love in the Wild followed suit and was up six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Over on FOX, So You Think You Can Dance with guest judge Lady Gaga was up half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo.

It was a typical Tuesday summer night. ABC's 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo for more series lows while Combat Hospital was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. Over on NBC, the second week of game show It's Worth What? came crashing down from last weeks so-so debut as it was down 1.3 million viewers and half a demo point. Clearly, this is not the next Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? America's Got Talent followed and was down six tenths in viewers and also half a demo point. This show was getting demos in the mid 4s just a couple weeks ago. FOX remained solid with its unscripted combo. Hell's Kitchen was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while MasterChef was up a nice half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo. These two shows are very compatible with each other.

Monday night was affected by dueling speeches from President Obama and Speaker Boehner on the debt ceiling debate. ABC had The Bachelorette interrupted but it continued after the speech and was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. The season finale of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition started late and was up four tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. It seems likely this show will be back in some capacity. Over on FOX, Hell's Kitchen was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo while MasterChef was preempted for the night.

It was a quiet Sunday night but there was some new programming on CBS and NBC. On CBS, 60 Minutes was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo while Big Brother was dead even with last week. The premiere of Same Name followed at 9pm and had a very soft debut as it lost a major portion of the Big Brother audience. If it drops a lot from here, it might not be worth keeping on even in the summer as CBS shows repeat fairly well. Over on NBC, Dateline NBC was up eight tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo while big dud The Marriage Ref was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

THE RUNDOWN: Tuesday, July 26

Tuesdays are the best night in the summer for new programming as every channel has at least some new programming. ABC has 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show which is fading after a steady start and Combat Hospital, CBS has a Tuesday edition of 48 Hours Mystery, NBC has week two of It's Worth What? which had a somewhat soft debut as well as America's Got Talent which has been slipping lately. FOX has Hell's Kitchen and MasterChef, the latter of which was preempted tonight due to speeches by President Obama and Speaker Boehner.

PILOT REVIEW: Same Name

SAME NAME

CBS's new reality show Same Name did not start off on a good foot for me as it showed Kathy Griffin, David Hasselhoff, and Mike Tyson - three celebrities I do not care for. It is certainly an interesting concept (celebrities switch lives with people who have the same names) but it was almost an immediate turn off as celebrity David Hasselhoff bragged about his illustrious career. Luckily, the everyday man David Hasselhoff was much more likable.

CBS has a good concept here with the fish-out-of-water played out in two different ways. Celebrity Hasselhoff was pretty annoying and clearly didn't know how to act in a regular life without bragging about something while Regular Hasselhoff fit into the celebrity lifestyle much better but was quite candid about how it didn't fit him. It continued to play out the same way - Celebrity Hasselhoff couldn't do anything ("I'm an actor. Lights go off in my house, I move") while Regular Hasselhoff remained likable even if he was a bit like Jed Clampett. Celebrity Hasselhoff was slightly redeeming at the end. It's a good but it would be better with more likable stars. Of course with Kathy Griffin on the horizon, it looks like it will only get worse on that front.

The usual shows were new on Thursday night. On ABC, Wipeout was down a tenth in viewers but up a tenth in the demo. Expedition: Impossible followed and was down a tenth in viewers and the demo for more series lows. Rookie Blue at 10pm was up a tenth in viewers but down a tenth in the demo. Over on CBS, Big Brother was up a nice three tenths in viewers and the demo. The results edition of So You Think You Can Dance was down a tenth in viewers and the demo. Finally, NBC aired the series finale of the cancelled Love Bites was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo. This show was doomed ever since it lost its Thursday slot last summer and got benched for almost a full year but those who did find the show seemed to like it for the most part.

THE RUNDOWN: Monday, July 25

Check back tomorrow for a review of CBS's new show Same Name as well as ratings recaps for Thurs-Sun. I just didn't get around to them today! Who cares, it's summer anyway :) Monday will be a battle between ABC and FOX with ABC likely to take total viewers with FOX snagging the demo. Of note is the season finale of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, which has probably done well enough to earn a second season next summer or as a fill-in during the season.

NBC's America's Got Talent was down 1.1 million viewers and three tenths in the demo for a season low while FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was even in viewers and up a tenth in the demo. Elsewhere, NBC's Love in the Wild was down half a million viewers and a tenth in the demo for a series low. ABC's next installment of Primetime Nightline was down a million viewers but even in the demo with last week while CBS's Big Brother was down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo, nearly snagging the top demo number for the nigh from Talent.

PILOT REVIEW: It's Worth What?

IT'S WORTH WHAT?

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, Directed by Don Weiner

It's Worth What? is a new summer game show on NBC that is sort of a hybrid between The Price is Right and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Contestants climb a ladder of dollar amounts like Millionaire but earn it by correctly winning pricing games as on The Price is Right. However, in this game they are bidding on artifacts and collectibles such as a Wayne Gretzky signed hockey stick, classic French tapestries, a dress worn by Cindy Brady, and actual rare live animals.

I don't hold summer shows to the same standard that I hold in-season shows to. For me, the quality of summer shows boils down to - did it hold my interest? It's Worth What? did not succeed in doing so. Host Cedric the Entertainer seemed quite bored the whole time. He was basically just going through the motions the whole time even though he could have been quite entertaining. Not surprisingly, the contestants were over the top most of the time. Also, as is too often the case nowadays, the show seemed overproduced. I don't think game shows need to be so fancy from a production standpoint. The gameplay should be able to speak for itself if its a quality show - look at The Price is Right, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. They also kept trying to make "it's worth WHAT?" happen but that seemed forced. The most interesting part of the show was the artifacts themselves which were interesting but that idea could wear thin after a couple weeks. It's a summer game show so I didn't expect much and I'd say it pretty much matched my expectations. It is what it is, an ok show to have on in the background if you have nothing better to do or watch.

THE RUNDOWN: Thursday, July 21

Thursday night has the regular new shows. ABC is new all night where Expedition: Impossible is becoming the weak link. CBS has Big Brother at 9pm and FOX has So You Think You Can Dance results. Finally, NBC has the series finale of Love Bites which was officially cancelled this week to no surprise. It picked up a few fans in its long-delayed run but not nearly enough.

Tuesday saw a premiere on NBC and more of the same new summer shows elsewhere. The premiere of the game show It's Worth What? kicked things off on NBC. While its debut wasn't overly impressive, it did have to be a self starter so it's not a horrible number. If it can hold near these numbers, NBC will take it. It's surprising they didn't launch it after America's Got Talent. Talent aired at 9pm and was down a rough 2 million viewers and four tenths in the demo, which is a surprising drop. What is starting to happen to this show? ABC had a new 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show which was up two tenths in viewers but down a tenth in the demo for a series low. The novelty of this show appears to be wearing off quickly. It was followed by Combat Hospital which was up a tenth in viewers and even n the demo. CBS had reruns from 8-10pm but they posted some of their best numbers this summer. A Tuesday edition of 48 Hours Mystery didn't do much at 10pm. FOX aired the Tuesday premiere of Hell's Kitchen which won the 8pm hour in the demo. MasterChef at 9pm was up six tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo from its last Tuesday airing two weeks ago.

THE RUNDOWN: Wednesday, July 20

Check back later today for a review of the series premiere of NBC's new game show It's Worth What?

As usual, NBC is all new on Wednesday night and should be strong from 9-10pm with America's Got Talent but Love in the Wild is continuing to slip at 10pm. ABC has a new Primetime Nightline, FOX has So You Think You Can Dance, which isn't that strong this summer, and CBS should be solid at 8pm with Big Brother.

9:00 MasterChef
Viewers: 5.6 million, 18-49 demo: 2.4

The usual suspects were new on Monday night. FOX was the champion in the demo thanks to the season premiere of Hell's Kitchen, which pulled in a solid number in the demo, and MasterChef, which was up half a million viewers and three tenths in the demo for season highs. This show has grown nicely since the season premiere was at a low 1.8 demo. On ABC, The Bachelorette was down a tenth in viewers and a surprising three tenths in the demo (perhaps due to gains on FOX?). Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition was up three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo which is a nice performance considering the lead-in dropped.

THE RUNDOWN: Tuesday, July 19

Tuesday night has the series premiere of NBC's new game show It's Worth What? which may be able to carve out a decent summer audience. It is followed by the top summer draw America's Got Talent so it's kind of surprising that NBC didn't give it a Talent lead-in to start things off. Elsewhere, ABC is new from 9-11pm with its usual lineup. 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show slipped last week after three weeks of steady ratings, was that an aberration or a bad sign? CBS is replacing The Good Wife with a new 48 Hours Mystery again and FOX has night #2 of the new season of Hell's Kitchen followed by MasterChef. All in all, a pretty competitive night by summer's standards.

On NBC, Dateline NBC was down a million viewers and a tenth in the demo while The Marriage Ref was up 1.1 million viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week's series lows.

It was a quiet Friday as usual in the summer. ABC's 20/20 was down seven tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo from last week. CBS's Flashpoint was down three tenths in viewers and even in the demo and NBC's Dateline NBC was down nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo. Finally, the series finale of Friday Night Lights was up two tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. Major props to NBC for helping this series have a five season run despite its very low ratings because it is of the highest quality. It was critically adored and had a very loyal but small fan base. It's a shame it never found a mass audience but an upside to declining viewership and the rise of cable is that a show like this can have a satisfying run.

ABC was all new on Thursday but their summer lineup is slipping. At 8pm, Wipeout was down two tenths in viewers and the demo from last week. At 9pm, Expedition: Impossible was down nine tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for series lows as this has been a summer flop for the alphabet net. Finally, the just-renewed Rookie Blue was down four tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo which isn't too bad considering its lead-in drop. Over on CBS, Big Brother was down 1.3 million viewers and half a demo point from last week's season premiere which is a pretty steep drop but still a solid demo. Elsewhere, NBC's Love Bites was dead even with last week while FOX's So You Think You Can Dance results were down a tenth in viewers and even in the demo.

9:00 America's Got Talent
Viewers: 11.4 million, 18-49 demo: 3.0
10:00 Love in the Wild
Viewers: 5.0 million, 18-49 demo: 1.6

FOX
8:00 So You Think You Can Dance
Viewers: 5.6 million, 18-49 demo: 1.9

Each of the broadcast networks had at least one new show on Wednesday night. ABC's Primetime Nightline special was mostly ignored while CBS got more good numbers from Big Brother as the show has been doing better than last summer so far. NBC was new all night. At 8pm, Minute to Win It was down four tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. It was followed by America's Got Talent which was down a big 1.5 million viewers and six tenths in the demo. This show has started to slip after hitting huge highs. It seemed to be doing best when it was airing in tandem with The Voice. At 10pm, Love in the Wild was down eight tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo for its third week as this show continues to fall. FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was down nine tenths in viewers and a rough half a demo point. Looks like everyone was outside on Wednesday night!

SEASON IN REVIEW: 2011 Emmy Award Nominations

Here are the major nominees for the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards!

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Dexter (Showtime)
Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Game of Thrones (HBO)
The Good Wife (CBS)
Mad Men (AMC)
Comments: What a thrill to see the long overdue Friday Night Lights finally score a best series nomination in its final season! Once again, broadcast networks take a backseat to cable in the drama division though probably the biggest surprise was the lack of attention towards The Walking Dead in this or any other major category. This award will probably come down to a battle between the new Boardwalk Empire and perennial favorite Mad Men.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Michael C. Hall, Dexter (Showtime)
Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
Hugh Laurie, House (FOX)
Timothy Olyphant, Justified (FX)
Comments: No huge surprises here except how many times is Hugh Laurie going to keep being nominated for a show that is past its prime? I would love to see the award go to Kyle Chandler but it is probably Jon Hamm's year finally.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law (NBC)
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights (DirecTV/NBC)
Mireille Enos, The Killing (AMC)
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU (NBC)
Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife (CBS)
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men (AMC)
Comments: The biggest surprise here is Kathy Bates. While she was easily the best part of Harry's Law, the show was not Emmy-caliber by any means but awards shows love Kathy Bates so that might explain it. Also, Mariska Hargitay is the Hugh Laurie of this category while some are surprised that Kyra Sedgwick did not get a nod for The Closer. This award will probably come down to Julianna Marguiles, who was the favorite last year but lost, and Elisabeth Moss.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age (TNT)
Josh Charles, The Good Wife (CBS)
Peter Dinklage, Game of Throne (HBO)
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife (CBS)
Walton Goggins, Justified (FX)
John Slattery, Mad Men (AMC)
Comments: No major surprises in this category and it's tough to say who will get the award here. I'm not a loyal watcher of any of these shows so I don't have much to say on this one.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife (CBS)
Michelle Forbes, The Killing (AMC)
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men (AMC)
Kelly MacDonald, Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Margo Martindale, Justified (FX)
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife (CBS)
Comments: No huge surprises here either. It wouldn't be surprising to see one of the two actresses from The Good Wife win including a possible repeat win for Archie Panjabi.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
30 Rock (NBC)
The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Glee (FOX)
Modern Family (ABC)
The Office (NBC)
Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Comments: This was a tough category but it ended up being a sweep for the broadcast networks. I watch three of these shows regularly (Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreation) and while I love all three, Parks and Recreation was the most consistently funny this season. I'm thrilled to see it get the nod and would love to see it win but it wouldn't be surprising to see Modern Family win its second straight, and it is very deserving as well.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC)
Louis C.K., Louie (FX)
Steve Carell, The Office (NBC)
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes (Showtime)
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Comments: Some thought that Joel McHale might get a nod here but overall, this list is not too surprising. Many are happy to see Johnny Galecki get a nod alongside co-star (and last year's winner) Jim Parsons. However, in his final season, Steve Carell is more than overdue for a win as one of the best characters in TV history. Though the show was uneven this year, Carell was at the top of his game as always and very much deserves to go out on top.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
Tina Fey, 30 Rock (NBC)
Laura Linney, The Big C (Showtime)
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly (CBS)
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope (FOX)
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation (NBC)
Comments: This was an interesting category as some people thought there would be nods for Lea Michelle, Patricia Heaton, or Courteney Cox. But it's nice to see McCarthy and Plimpton in there, representing new shows (and McCarthy was announcing the nominations and floored to find out on live TV!) The winner, however, should be Amy Poehler who is the heart of a great ensemble on Parks and Recreation.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Ty Burrell, Modern Family (ABC)
Chris Colfer, Glee (FOX)
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family (ABC)
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family (ABC)
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family (ABC)
Comments: This category was all about Modern Family as all four male adults were nominated including Ed O'Neill, who did not make the cut last year. While they are very deserving, the only downside is that there was no room for the talented supporting cast of Parks and Recreation, particularly Nick Offerman who certainly deserved a nod over Jon Cryer. Another snub in some opinions was Neil Patrick Harris but this was a very competitive category. If the Modern Family men cancel each other out, Chris Colfer could get the win but if it goes to one of the Family, it should be Ty Burrell's turn this year.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Julie Bowen, Modern Family (ABC)
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock (NBC)
Jane Lynch, Glee (FOX)
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family (ABC)
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland (TV Land)
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live (NBC)
Comments: This wasn't as competitive as the Actor category and not too surprising either but that doesn't mean all are deserving. Everyone loves Betty White, but Hot in Cleveland and her work on it are certainly not Emmy-worthy. Kristen Wiig also has gotten more over the top and screechier on Saturday Night Live but maybe Bridesmaids is fresh in the voters' memory. Last year's winner Jane Lynch is hosting the Emmys this year but many Glee fans thought her character wasn't nearly as strong this year. This award should come down to the two Modern Family ladies and while Vergara might be favored, I would give it to Bowen who was fantastic this season.

It was a usual Tuesday on broadcast networks. ABC was new from 9-11pm. At 9pm, 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show was down three tenths in viewers and the demo. Is it starting to fade or was it the tougher competition from FOX? At 10pm, Combat Hospital was down six tenths in viewers and two tenths in the demo. America's Got Talent on NBC was down 1.7 million viewers and six tenths in the demo which is a surprisingly big drop. CBS had a 48 Hours Mystery special which didn't do too much at 10pm while FOX's All-Star Game was solid but down from where it used to be when baseball was in its heyday.

ABC was all new on Monday night with its regular lineup after a week off for the 4th of July. The Bachelorette was down two tenths in viewers and even in the demo from its last new airing while Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition was down eight tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo, which is somewhat a surprising drop since the lead-in held steady. Elsewhere, the series finale of the cancelled Law & Order: LA was down 1.6 million viewers and four tenths in the demo. Maybe between this and The Event as well as FlashForward last year, networks will learn that long hiatuses for struggling shows will not work. Finally, FOX's MasterChef was even in viewers and up two tenths in the demo from its last new Monday episode for a season high in the demo.

ABC was the big winner on Sunday night as Diane Sawyer's interview with Jaycee Duggard pulled in excellent numbers. This was above expectations but was promoted well and struck a chord with the public apparently leading to the best summer audience for a newsmagazine since 2004. Elsewhere, CBS had normal summer numbers for 60 Minutes while Big Brother was solid in the demo and NBC's The Marriage Ref fell on its face to series lows. Needless to say, this won't be back for a third season.

FOX
8:00 So You Think You Can Dance
Viewers: 6.5 million, 18-49 demo: 2.4

Wednesday was a mix of originals and repeats on the broadcast networks. NBC and FOX were all new though. NBC started with a new Minute to Win It which wasn't too strong but better than it was during the regular season in the same slot. At 9pm, America's Got Talent was down eight tenths in viewers and half a demo point from last week when it followed the finale of The Voice. It was followed by the second week of Love in the Wild which was down seven tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo from its premiere. The drop wasn't a great sign but its retention out of Talent was better this week. FOX's So You Think You Can Dance was up nine tenths in viewers and four tenths in the demo reversing a downward trend. The only other new program was a Nightline special on Casey Anthony which bumped the Beyond Belief series for the night on ABC but didn't do too much.

THE RUNDOWN: Thursday, July 7

There is new programming on each network in some capacity on Thursday night. ABC has its regular Thursday lineup which saw big drops last week. Will it perk back up now that it's not heading into a holiday weekend? CBS has the season premiere of their annual summer show Big Brother. It's always been solid but  not spectacular in the ratings. NBC has a new Love Bites and FOX has the results show for So You Think You Can Dance.

NBC dominated as usual on Tuesday night thanks to three hours of America's Got Talent. The final auditions episode was solid at 8pm but the 9pm episode posted its best numbers of the season and was way up from last week's one hour episode. This remains the show to beat in the summer. Elsewhere, ABC had new episodes of its summer shows from 9-11pm following a repeat of Wipeout. At 9pm, 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show was down four tenths in viewers but even in the demo. This show has held up remarkably well in its first three weeks and could see a second summer as a result. At 10pm, Combat Hospital was down three tenths in viewers and a tenth in the demo. FOX's MasterChef was up a nice five tenths in viewers and three tenths in the demo while a late addition on CBS covering the Casey Anthony trial was up from the usual numbers for The Good Wife reruns.
