CANCELLATION ALERT: Medium

In our first veteran series cancellation of the season, CBS has axed the long-running Medium which will ends its run on January 21. The long-running drama ran for 5 years on NBC before moving to CBS in Fall 2009. The writing was on the wall for the show after CBS slashed its episode order to 13 a few weeks back. A bubble show for renewal last spring, it has languished in a sleepy Friday 8pm timeslot. Through eight episodes this fall, it has averaged 6.4 million viewers and a low 1.3 in the demo. By the time its run ends, it will have amassed 130 episodes. Its best season came in its first season (midseason 2004-2005 on NBC) when it averaged 13.9 million viewers.

There is no word yet on what will replace Medium but many speculate it will be either The Defenders, which has underwhelmed in its Weds 10pm slot or one of CBS's two new midseason dramas - Chaos or Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, though the latter doesn't seem likely to get an 8pm slot. There are five remaining episodes, it is already slotted for November 19 (tomorrow) and December 3 while the final three will likely come after the new year including the Jan 21 finale.
